About this award

This $5,346,066.00 cost-sharing contract was awarded by NASA's Glenn Research Center to RTX Corporation's Raytheon Technologies Research Center to develop and demonstrate a fuel-flexible combustor architecture for high-bypass-ratio, small-core, high-pressure-ratio turbofan engines for future N+3 generation aircraft. The contract supports NASA's Fixed Wing Project goals of achieving dramatic reductions in harmful emissions while improving efficiency and reducing community noise for subsonic commercial aircraft. The work includes designing, fabricating, and testing the combustor concept on both jet fuel and a 50% alternative fuel blend. This contract does not have a set-aside designation, reflecting RTX's position as a large defense contractor. As a prime contractor, RTX has extensive experience supporting federal R&D efforts across the aerospace and defense sectors.

Description

NASA research announcement - fuel-flexible combustor for high-OPR compact-core N+3 propulsion engine (P.100.0658). Develop & demonstrate a combustor architecture for high-bypass-ratio, small-core, high-pressure-ratio turbofan engines for N+3 aircraft, to meet N+3 emissions goals with jet fuel and with 50/50 jet/alternative-fuel blends. -develop combustor design tools and criteria related to alternative-fuels and high-pressure operation. - identify, evaluate, and develop enabling technologies and methods for combustion in small-core engines at high-pressure conditions, addressing challenges associated with low emissions, e.g. scaling rules, fuel-injection, thermal management, autoignition, andcombustion dynamics. - engine sizing and cycle analysis to define combustor requirements, for concept evaluation and design. -CFD and reduced-order modeling for aerothermal design & evaluation, chemical kinetics including pollutant formation, and combustion dynamics. - component and sub-component tests at non-reacting and reacting conditions, to evaluate aerodynamic/aerothermal performance, autoignition, and mixing for small-core combustor designs and alternative-fuel use. - single-sector combustor testing at actual conditions over the full engine cycle (up to 1000 psia & 1300 F). - alignment with NASA interests and programs: this proposal directly addresses NASA's fixed wing project goals of achieving dramatic reductions in harmful emissions, in a propulsion engine concept that dramatically reduces community noise and provides revolutionary efficiency improvements for subsonic commercial aircraft. - alignment with objectives of solicitation: this proposal directly addresses the objectives of subtopic 2.2.1 (low-emissions fuel-flexible N+3 combustor technology), namely to develop and demonstrate a low-emissions fuel-flexible combustor concept that meets N+3 emissions goals for LTO and cruise NOX in fuel-efficient gas turbines intended for future (N+3) single-aisle transport aircraft. The proposal tasks are directed toward meeting the expected outcomes of the solicitation subtopic 2.2.1., including combustor concept design, fabrication, and testing on jet fuel and a 50% alternative fuel blend, and delivery of test hardware and a test matrix to NASA.
