Added: Jul 17, 2008 4:00 pm A SOLICITATION OF THE NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH (NIH) AND THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION (CDC) FOR SMALL BUSINESS INNOVATION RESEARCH (SBIR) CONTRACT PROPOSALS1. National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD 20892 and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, GA 30305 are soliciting proposals from small business concerns that possess the research and development (R&D) expertise to conduct innovative research that will contribute toward meeting the program objectives of the agencies. A SOLICITATION OF THE NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH (NIH) AND THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION (CDC) FOR SMALL BUSINESS INNOVATION RESEARCH CONTRACT PROPOSALS [PHS 2009-1], with a closing date of November 3, 2008, for receipt of proposals, soon will be available electronically tough the NIH Small Business Research Funding Opportunities (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/sbir.htm) Web site. The SBIR Phase I Contract Solicitation will be available ONLY via electronic means. Printed copies of the Solicitation will not be distributed. Potential offerors are encouraged to check the NIH Small Business Research Funding Opportunities Web site for updates on the program. Any updates or corrections to the Solicitation will be posted there. The purposes of the SBIR program are to: (a) stimulate technological innovation; (b) use small business to meet Federal Research/Research & Development (R/R&D) needs; (c) foster and encourage participation by socially and economically disadvantaged small business concerns and by small business concerns that are 51 percent owned and controlled by women, in technological innovation; and (d) increase private sector commercialization of innovations derived from Federal R/R&D, thereby increasing competition, productivity and economic growth. For purposes of the SBIR program, a small business concern is any business concern that, on the date of award, (1) is organized for profit, with a place of business located in the United States, which operates primarily within the United States or which makes a significant contribution to the United States economy tough payment of taxes or use of American products, materials or labor; (2) is in the legal form of an individual proprietorship, partnership, limited liability company, corporation, joint venture, association, trust or cooperative, except that where the form is a joint venture, there can be no more than 49 percent participation by foreign business entities in the joint venture; (3) is at least 51 percent owned and controlled by one or more individuals who are citizens of, or permanent resident aliens in, the United States; or is owned and controlled by another (one) small business concern that is itself at least 51 percent owned and controlled by one or more individuals who are citizens of, or permanent resident aliens in, the United States; AND (4) has, including its affiliates, no more than 500 employees. NATIONAL HEART, LUNG, AND BLOOD INSTITUTE (NHLBI): Ultrasonic Wave Transmitter, Transmission Line and Receiver for Interventional MRI; Nanoprobes for Non-Invasive Detection of Atherosclerotic Plaques; Development of Pathogen Inactivation Technologies for Blood Components; Development of Cell-based Bioassays Using Induced Pluripotent Stem (iPS) Cell Lines; Development of Novel Formulations for Iron Chelators to Treat Iron Overload in Patients on Transfusion Therapy; Multiplexed Assay Platforms for Protein Biomarkers of Cardiovascular Disease; Transcatheter Ablation Devices for Arrhythmia Treatment; Developing Novel Anticoagulants and Synthetic Heparins; Development of Gene Transfer Approaches for Correction of Genetic Blood Diseases; Wireless Communications Systems for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Guided Surgery.
