About this award

The Federal Railroad Administration awarded a $445,550 definitive contract to Thornton Tomasetti, Inc. (Weidlinger Applied Science division) on February 27, 2017, for research and development of ultrasonic inspection methods for rail heads.

The effort develops methods to increase the reliability of phased-array ultrasonic inspections of rail heads through novel flaw characterization algorithms and finite element analysis simulation. The work uses proprietary software (PZFLEX) specialized for transducer design and wave propagation modeling to formulate virtual inspections, with automated predictive analysis operating on simulated inspection data libraries to characterize flaws. Place of performance is New York, NY. The contract carries a firm fixed price and completed on August 31, 2020.

Description

The main objective of this proposed effort is to develop a method for increasing the reliability of ultrasonic inspections of rail heads through the use of PA ultrasonic systems and novel flaw characterization algorithms. In order to fully understand and optimize the rail head flaw and inspection data relationship, we propose to formulate virtual inspections using our proprietary software pzflex, a finite element analysis software specialized for transducer design and simulating wave propagation in structures. Automated predictive analysis operating on a library of simulated PA inspection data will be implemented to characterize flaws.
