Description
The international society for technology in education (ISTE) seeks to provide NASA with 2 data challenges and related virtual workshops in connection with the MMS mission and august 2017 solar eclipse and the related student learning objectives that will be centered around the magnetosphere, space weather, and data analysis. The intent of these four deliverables will be to reach out to members of the formal and informal education community through outreach intended to meet each group's needs. The first deliverable will be a virtual workshop in the fall 2016 to bring visibility and dissemination to the previously developed student activity book, MMS big data book, and its teacher companion google site with teacher resources, videos, and explanatory guidance. This virtual workshop will walk educators from within schools, libraries, community organizations, etc. Through how to teach the scientific principles associated with using these resources by providing best practice tips to keep learners engaged in the MMS mission at the same time as they are learning about the importance of data. The second deliverable will be to create a data challenge directly related to the MMS big data book that connects learners to the public data stream coming from the four MMS satellites in earth's orbit. Learners will explore how to collect data and information from the MMS data sites, analyze the information, make interpretations, and present their findings to create authentic, realworld citizen science by sharing their findings through social media channels or other digital storytelling formats specifically related to the MMS mission. The third deliverable will be to create a data challenge, using the data collection, analysis, and reporting principles found in the MMS big data book, to connect learners with data sets related to the solar eclipse 2017. IT will also encourage the community of observers at-large, to prepare to collect their own specific data objects from wherever they are in the world during the solar eclipse to share and then interpret long after the event is complete. The fourth deliverable will be a second virtual workshop in the late-spring or early-summer to walk formal or informal educators through these two newly created data challenges, by giving examples and demonstrations and clarifying the science principles associated with the MMS mission. ISTE will disseminate these resources widely via member channels, ISTE social media, and feature them on an ISTE webpage with links for downloading the resources. ISTE will submit the data challenges through the NASA's product review process for publication on NASA education and MMS websites. NASA can also have a session at ISTE 2017 in SAN antonio to broaden awareness of these resources.
