About this award

This federal contract award from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for $750,000.00 was granted to Baltimore City Community College (BCCC) to support a 36-month project to increase the success rates of underrepresented minorities, women, and disadvantaged veterans in BCCC's engineering-related programs. The project will revise five engineering courses with NASA Hubble Telescope content, promote and recruit underrepresented groups into engineering, provide student support services, and develop new courses incorporating the concept of materials, structures, mechanical systems, and manufacturing (MSMM) related to NASA's strategic goals. The award is not a set-aside contract. The project will partner with several universities, STEM organizations, and industry leaders to achieve its objectives.

Description

Baltimore city community college bccc proposes a 36 month project to increase the success rates of underrepresented minorities, women, and disadvantaged veterans in bcccs engineering related programs engineering transfer, electrical engineering, and robotics. The project will address the MC3I primary focus developing and expanding curricular options in engineering. The proposed work will include course articulations with NASA content from bccc to 4 year institutions, attracting retaining underrepresented minorities, women, disadvantaged veterans in engineering, and engaging students in materials, structure, mechanical systems and manufacturing msmm, with nasas goddard space flight center gsfc as a partner. The proposed work will also be supported by morgan state university MSU, capitol technology university CTU, coppin state university CSU, university of maryland baltimore county umbc, baltimore city public school systems bcpss, juxtopia LLC, lockheed martin corporation, the amtek company, baltimore gas electric BGE, amazon JLL, national society of black engineers nsbe, career communication groups CCG, united states postal services USPS, and maryland center for veterans education and training mcvet. The project will be designed to attract, retain, and support the success of diverse students in NASA related engineering fields by 1 revising five engineering related courses with NASA hubble telescope content and articulating them to four year institutions 2 promoting and recruiting underrepresented minorities, women, and disadvantaged veterans into engineering via organized NASA related activities and a baltimore city public school system bcpss project lead the way pltw articulation 3 retaining and supporting the success of underrepresented minorities, women, and disadvantaged veterans via strong mathematics centered advising activities, internship job opportunities, scholarships financial support 4 revising three courses with nasas support to incorporate the concept of msmm and 5 enabling students, via the newly developed msmm courses, to develop skills in cutting edge technologies that apply to a wide range of NASA strategic goals and agency programs. The expected outcomes of this project are 1 a series revised courses with NASA content which can be articulated to 4 year institutions 2 a mathematics centered advising model that is ready to be used nationally 3 internship job transfer opportunities for 95 of bccc engineering robotics graduates 4 20 more bcpss students and 100 more disadvantaged veterans enrolled into bcccs engineering related programs 5 provide 20 scholarships to engineering robotics students annually, and 6 increased success rates of bccc engineering related programs by an average of 20 25. The proposed project will demonstrate significant impacts by first improving engineering related education with NASA content for a significant number of underrepresented minorities, women and disadvantaged veterans at bccc. Secondly, the proposed project will motivate an increased number of community college students and veterans to pursue an engineering profession in a NASA related field.
