Description
Jupiter-like atmospheric chemistries have long been modeled in thermochemical equilibrium (TE) (fegley and lodders 1994, lodders and fegley 2002, visscher ET AL. 2006). These models address disequilibrium by identifying a rate-limiting chemical reaction and comparing that rate to a dynamical mixing time. The chemical composition is quenched at the last point where the two time scales were equal. Meanwhile atmospheric photochemical codes have evolved downward to higher pressures. The first of these was liang ET AL. (2003, 2004), who adapted the caltech/JPL kinetics" code to hot highly irradiated jupiters. Zahnle ET AL (2009) adapted a mars hotochemistry code. Both models used lower boundaries that are much too shallow. Zahnle also assumed isothermal atmospheres, which was very favorable to the production of nonmethane hydrocarbons. Line ET AL. (2010) updated liang ET AL.'s code with a quenching argument to connect TE abundances to the kinetically-computed abundances higher up. CO-i kempton has been working with a RE-written version of the zahnle ET AL. (2009) photochemistry code for the past several years (e.g. miller-ricci kempton ET AL. 2012). She has specifically used IT to study the atmospheres of extrasolar super-earths -- planets with masses between 1 and 10 times that of the earth. She also uses an equilibrium chemistry code that she developed as a graduate student following white ET AL. 1958, which currently computes gas phase abundances in thermochemical equilibrium for ~170 gas phase molecules.
