Description

The great futures in science: boys & girls clubs of america (bgca) robotics project is a 33-month educational initiative that engages traditionally underserved and underrepresented youth ages 6-18 in a hands-on, inquiry-based robotics program utilizing NASA themes and resources. Bgca will integrate three age-specific initiatives in its afterschool programming at 33 locations and programming in summer project at 300 sites across the country each year: partner first will provide stem resources and involve youth in its programs and competitions. Project outcomes include: 1) a greater connection to NASA's mission and its educational resources for thousands of underserved youth: 2) a greater number of girls, minorities, native americans, and other underserved youth expressing interest in participating in stem; 3) a greater number of youth indicating scientific careers are something they can envision for their futures; and 4) a greater number of youth remaining engaged in stem academics. The project will provide a continuity of age-appropriate programming from elementary to high school to keep youth 1) erngaged in learning and utilizing science, math, and engineering concepts, 2) fired up and informed about school, and 3) aware of NASA contributions and career paths. By the end of the project period, 1) at least 15,000 youth ages 6-18 from more than 330 communities will have participated: 2) a minimum of 65 informal EDUCATION1 staff members will be trained in NASA content and more comfortable implementing stem programming: and 3) bgca will have developed an infrastructure for hands-on, NASA-relevant programming for underserved youth.
