Description
This proposal is for the implementation of an innovative collaborative project that addresses the need to increase the number of qualified science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (stem) educators. The statewide collaboration of seven higher education institutions in kentucky will produce stem middle and high school teachers that possess advanced content-specific pedagogical preparation. The project will serve as a model for university partnerships in other states and stem education projects. IT uses the interdisciplinary stem theme of the environment as the context, which positions the project to address content and pedagogy of crosscutting stem disciplines. The project includes five components for stem pre-service teacher fellows (fellows) and other stem education pre-service and in service teachers. Fellows will receive advanced training and mentoring as interns at university centers for environmental education (EE) and biological field stations, in an online learning community, development of stem learning modules, special programs like curriculum training workshops, and attendance at stem conferences. The project includes a projected minimum of 340 contact hours and $2,910 in financial support for each of 56 fellows. Key personnel and an external evaluator will regularly collect and analyze data and report findings to NASA agencies and other stem educator stakeholders via a robust mixed methods evaluation and research plan.
