INVESTING IN TECHNOLOGIES, SUCH AS INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY, BIOTECHNOLOGY, AND NANOTECHNOLOGY, WILL SUPPORT THE CREATION OF GOOD JOBS BY HELPING U.S. MANUFACTURERS REDUCE COSTS, IMPROVE QUALITY, AND ACCELERATE PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT. THE PCAST REPORT CALLS FOR A PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN GOVERNMENT, INDUSTRY, AND ACADEMIA TO IDENTIFY THE MOST PRESSING CHALLENGES AND TRANSFORMATIVE OPPORTUNITIES FOR IMPROVING THE TECHNOLOGIES, PROCESSES AND PRODUCTS ACROSS MULTIPLE MANUFACTURING INDUSTRIES. THE ADVANCED MANUFACTURING INITIATIVE (AMI) IS A NASA OFFICE OF THE CHIEF TECHNOLOGIST (OCT) EFFORT BEING WORKED WITH THE WHITE HOUSE TO FOSTER PUBLIC/PRIVATE PARTNERSHIPS BETWEEN THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AND PRIVATE INDUSTRY IN THE AREAS OF 1) ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING, 2) ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY SUPPORT/ACCESS TO SMALL AND MEDIUM MANUFACTURER, AND 3) REGIONAL ACADEMIC SUPPORT TO LOCAL SCHOOLS AND UNIVERSITIES. NASA GLENN HAS A LONG HISTORY OF PARTNERING WITH COMPANIES AND UNIVERSITIES TO DEVELOP AND COMMERCIALIZE NEW ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES THAT HAVE BEEN THE FOUNDATION OF OUR NATION S ECONOMIC SUCCESS FROM COMMUNICATIONS, TO HOUSEHOLD PRODUCTS, THE JET ENGINE, AND THE INTERNET. THE AMI WILL PROVIDE THE PLATFORM FOR SIMILAR BREAKTHROUGHS IN THE NEXT DECADE, BY PROVIDING SMALL AND MEDIUM MANUFACTURERS ACCESS TO NASA ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES AND SUBJECT MATTER EXPERTS (SME) THAT WILL SPEED UP THE PROCESS OF TAKING IDEAS FROM THE DRAWING BOARD TO THE MANUFACTURING FLOOR, SCALING-UP FIRST-OF-A-KIND TECHNOLOGIES, AND DEVELOPING THE INFRASTRUCTURE AND SHARED FACILITIES TO ALLOW SMALL AND MID-SIZED MANUFACTURERS TO INNOVATE AND COMPETE. THIS COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT IS BEING NEGOTIATED SOLELY WITH THE MANUFACTURING ADVOCACY & GROWTH NETWORK (MAGNET) A REGIONAL NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION FOR ADVANCED MANUFACTURING IN NORTHERN OHIO. MAGNET IS THE ONLY NORTHERN OHIO REGIONAL PROVIDER OF MANUFACTURING EXTENSION PARTNERSHIP (MEP) SERVICES FUNDED BY THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE'S NATIONALINSTITUTE OF STANDARDS AND TECHNOLOGY. THIS AGREEMENT WILL BE A PILOT PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN NASA AND MAGNET. NASA WILL BE UTILIZING TWO OF MAGNET'S PARTNERSHIP VEHICLES TO ALLOW SMALL AND MEDIUM-SIZED MANUFACTURERS ACCESS TO NASA'S SMES, ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES AND FACILITIES.
