Description
Several studies have been undertaken by the principal investigator to show the recession of the pasterze glacier in austria through satellite imagery since the early 1980S. Ground truthing in combination with using data from the research team of the university of graz in austria have been used to conduct an in depth study (bayr 1994). The principal investigator has monitored the glacier since 1969 through numerous visits and data collection of the glacier (hall 200 I). He was invited by the university of graz to participate in the yearly survey in 1992. Every year in september the university of graz measures the flow speed ofthe glacier along three lines across the glacier at different locations. In addition the location of the tongue is surveyed in order to document its recession or advance. The loss of the height of the glacier is also measured by the team. In this proposal, we build on and utilize the university of graz work and take the study one step further. The principal investigator has procured monthly data of the production of melt water of the pasterze glacier from the verbundgesellschaft, kraftwerk kaprun, austria ( electric company at the kaprun power station in austria) from the early 1960S to 2010. The water of the glacier is collected at the margaritze reservoir at the end of the glacier and then pumped though the mountain to the kaprun power station. The electricity produced from this station is FED into the austrian train system network. The electric company monitors the flow of water into the margaritze reservoir since the glacier is shrinking not only in length by also in height. The reduction and variation of water flow has the electric company concerned.IT is proposed to study the situation of the pasterze glacier by comparing the water flow to the margaritze reservoir (located approximately one KM from the tenninus of the pasterze glacier) with the climatic data from two nearby weather stations, the rudolfshuette and the sonnblick. We will acquire climatic data from the zentralanstalt fuer meteologie and geodynamic, vienna, austria (temperature, precipitation, sunshine hours and cloud cover).
