Description

The national network of 45 challenger learning centers throughout the US will partner with after school programs serving minority and disadvantaged students. The students will go on simulated space missions at the challenger learning centers and do related earth, space and engineering activities in the after school programs. This builds on challenger's 25 years of experience using space as context to inspire middle school students to pursue studies and careers in science, technology, engineering and math. Established in the wake of the challenger shuttle tragedy, challenger's national network of 48 challenger learning centers take middle-school students on simulated space missions to earth orbit, the moon, mars and beyond. Participating students take on the roles of astronauts and flight support teams as they manage their space missions, solve emergencies along the way, and return to earth. These powerful experiences help students learn science, technology, engineering and math; develop skills of communication, creative thinking and problem-solving; and inspire them to pursue studies and careers in science and engineering, especially in earth and space science. As an out-of-school program, challenger is exceptionally well positioned to provide the summer and afterschool services called for in this can. We will use our 25 years of experience in this award-winning program with a track record of success to engage students in extended learning programs in the summer and after school. Students will participate in challenger missions, and then develop related skills through specialized programs in earth and space science, robotics, rocketry and other topics of relevance to the local communities. This planning great will enable US to work out the full details of this project, in collaboration with the challenger learning centers, and partner after school programs and specialists in research and evaluation. For the full implementation project, we will pilot the program in five challenger learning centers, and then disseminate IT to the rest of the challenger network, reaching 6,500 students over the 3 year project.
