Description
The non profit blue hill observatory science center stands ready, with a SOL planning grant, to define, refine and integrate an ascend - weather kite challenge program capacity into our highly successful/award winning women in natural science(wins) out of school programming which emphasizes student achievement in stem content amongst inner city, under served middle school aged girls. The hands-on/minds on, summertime ascend, weather kite challenge holds the potential to reach a national audience by the second year of programming while being integrated into school stem content since our students teachers, parents, and/or community . Members will act as mentors for the programming. The ascend program will have students design/fly kites using NASA teaching modules/resources in all aspects of their learning with the ultimate goal of competing at a weather kite challenge. Students will individually apply math, science, and technology skills to build/fly kites but work within a team format in competition. Stem academic achievement will be emphasized but girls will also meet female scientists/mentors positively influencing career goals and choices. This planning grant will produce educational modules for both novice(YRI) students as well as for veteran(YR2) students in a print/electronic format. These modules will incorporate NASA educational tools/resources. As with wins, rigorous review and testing creates productive/cost effective ways of introducing girls to stem content in a hands-on/minds-on way that is fun/entertaining/competitive in a team format. Our gender specific teaching experience from wins should allow US to provide the best environment in which girls can effectively learn about math and science in a non- threatening way. Wins has shown US effective ways to teach/enhance stem learning and those lessons will be applied to the summer of innovation ascend weather kite challenge program.
