STARBASE ROBINS IS A PREMIER DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM WHICH RESPONDS TO THE NEEDS OF TODAYS YOUTH THROUGH HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES FOCUSING ON SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATH (STEM) CONTENT AREAS. PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT AND CAREER GOAL SETTING IS ALSO A STRONG EMPHASIS OF OUR PROGRAM. OUR VISION IS TO RAISE THE INTEREST AND IMPROVE THE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL OF AT-RISK, DISADVANTAGED AND UNDER-REPRESENTED YOUTH IN STEM FIELDS OF STUDY AND TO PROVIDE FOR A HIGHLY EDUCATED AND SKILLED AMERICAN WORKFORCE. IN ESSENCE, WE WANT TO USE INNOVATION TO INSPIRE OUR YOUTH TO SEEK OUT THE STEM FIELDS OF STUDY AND POSSIBLY TO CHOSE THESE AREAS AS A CAREER CHOICE. PROJECT SUMMARY STARBASE ROBINS PROPOSES TO SUPPORT THE NASA 2010 SUMMER OF INNOVATION (SOL) CAPACITY BUILDING BY PLANNING A SCALE UP OF AN AFTER-SCHOOL STEM MENTORING PROGRAM CALLED STARBASE 2.0. STARBASE 2.0 HAS A UNIQUE PROGRAM DESIGN, INCORPORATING ELEMENTS OF TEAM MENTORING, SCHOOL-BASED MENTORING, AND AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMMING. TEAM MENTORING REFERS TO A GROUP SETTING WHERE THE YOUTH TO ADULT RATIO IS RELATIVELY LOW, WITH LESS THAN FIVE YOUTH TO ONE ADULT. A MENTOR TEAM CONSISTS OF A STEM PROFESSIONAL, A TEACHER AND A COLLEGE STUDENT EITHER IN THE EDUCATION OR STEM FIELD. STARBASE 2.0 COMBINES STEM ACTIVITIES WITH A RELATIONSHIP-RICH, SCHOOL-BASED ENVIRONMENT TO PROVIDE THE MISSING LINK FOR AT-RISK YOUTH MAKING THE TRANSITION FROM ELEMENTARY TO MIDDLE SCHOOL. IT EXTENDS THE POSITIVE IMPACT OF STEM THROUGH A TEAM MENTORING APPROACH WHICH SOLIDIFIES STUDENTS;, ATTACHMENT TO AND ENGAGEMENT WITH SCHOOL AND EXPOSES THEM TO STEM CAREERS. STUDENTS WILL MEET ONCE A WEEK FOR 1.5 HOURS. THE PROGRAM WILL KICK OFF WITH SUMMER OF INNOVATION ACADEMIES.
