Description
Williams college is submitting this unsolicited proposal on behalf of prof. JAY m. Pasachoff to DR. Alphonse sterling of NASA's msfc. The proposal is for prof. Pasachoff and one of his students to continue their work on the dynamics of small jets known as spicules in the chromosphere of the sun. DR. Pasachoff, working with colleagues, students, and DR. Alphonse sterling of NASA's msfc will continue to use data taken with NASA's transition region and chromo spheric observatory (trace) in space, the nasaiesa solar and heliospheric observatory (soho) in space, and the swedish i-m solar telescope on LA palma to understand these important parts of the energy transfer through the outer layers of the solar atmosphere. They will use data taken simultaneously with the sumer (solar ultraviolet measurement of emitted radiation) instrument on soho and the swedish i-m solar telescope on the ground to study spicule dynamics physical condition, taking into account their relation to the solar magnetic field. The williams group will consult with DR. Sterling in analyzing the data and in interpreting the results. Funds are requested for summer support and for travel for consultations and to present results.
