Description
Wnet.ORG and its partners, wgbh educational foundation and the education development center, propose to develop, disseminate, and evaluate a collection of online, digital media resources and professional development modules for high school educators and their students comprising topics in engineering, robotics, and rockets/propulsion systems engineering. This project, inspiring stem educators: the NASA physics and engineering collection on vital/teachersl.domain, will not only create the means by which educators can digitally attract and engage students with authentic NASA data, resources, and facilities, but IT will also provide educators with concrete models of effective practice to inspire and enhance media-enriched stem teaching while improving student comprehension and engagement directly addressing a number of application criteria, the purpose of the NASA physics and engineering collection (npec) is to create and disseminate repurposed and adapted video resources based on NASA content for teachers, and produce corresponding professional development modules to guide use of these resources. In alliance with NASA's enumerated goals, wnet.ORG's initiative will: 1. Strengthen NASA's connection to the future workforce targeting students in underserved communities; 2. Help attract and retain students in stem disciplines, namely physics and engineering, and engage students who might otherwise not consider careers in stem disciplines; and 3, augment the number of teachers and students who are informed about and engaged with NASA's mission to enhance science and technology literacy. The primary platform for assembly and distribution of the proposed resources will be vital (video in teaching and learning)/teachers' domain, the award-winning digital library created by wnet.ORG and wgbh to harness the power of media to support teaching and learning from pre-kindergarten through 12TH grade. Created by the education departments of public television stations wnet.ORG and wgbr, vitallteachers' domain leverages public television's content to support standards-aligned classroom instruction. Vital/teachers'.domain has grown to become far more than a repository of freely accessible, educational video footage. Designed with educators and students in mind, personal and group folders allow users to collect, organize, and annotate digital video clips, flash interactives, images, animations, interviews, background essays, discussion questions, correlations to curriculum standards and other contextual information to support classroom instruction, individual student inquiry, and teacher education. Vital/teachers'. Domain has attracted over 310,000 registered users nationally, representing usage by educators and students in 69% of public schools in the united states. Wnet.ORG and its project partners will collaborate to create and disseminate an integrated collection of online digital resources that will enable teachers to use media to enhance the teaching of physics and engineering by illustrating concepts with real-world applications expressed through multimedia and interactive resources. Although the primary target audience is teachers and students of basic high school physics in underserved communities, npec also addresses the needs of all high school physics students and teachers in the following deliverables: i. Four professional development videos that illustrate best practices and provide concrete models of effective teaching; 2. Four professional development modules (pdms) that will segment and supplement the aforementioned professional development videos with contextualized background materials; 3.20 interactive presentations created using NASA visualizations and other source materials; and 4.50 contextualized resources drawn from NASA's collection of media resources. Each resource will include a background essay, discussion questions, standards correlation. And teaching tips.
