Description
Crew interactions and autonomy during long-duration isolation and confinement the NASA/JSC behavioral health and performance (BHP) research program element is proposing to collaborate with the university of california, SAN francisco, and the institute for biomedical problems (IBMP), moscow, russia to study the effects of long duration isolation and confinement on crew members and ground support personnel. Simulations will be conducted in a space flight analog environment for periods of 105 and 520 days in conditions similar to those expected on expeditionary flights to mars. The proposed study provides an operational opportunity to assess the effects on isolation and confinement on crew performance and behavior. The results of this work will benefit planning for human exploration missions to both the moon and mars, in terms of the psychological impact of long duration isolation on crew members and ground support personnel.
