About this award
New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (New Mexico Tech) was awarded a $49.5K cooperative agreement by a civilian federal agency's Shared Services Center on May 1, 2025, with completion targeted for August 31, 2026. This research project, to be performed in Socorro, New Mexico, involves estimating microbial biomass and determining the activity of microbial contaminants using Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (FISH) and Card-FISH techniques. Surface swab samples collected by the Office of Biological and Physical Research (OOBLEK) Principal Investigator Graham will be analyzed at New Mexico Tech's Geobiology Laboratory, while witness coupons prepared with known cleanroom cultures will undergo organic analysis at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center and microbiological analysis via microscopy at New Mexico Tech.
The research effort will serve as a Master's thesis project and includes cell counts on selected culture samples to generate preliminary growth curve data and optimize staining and hybridization protocols. The contract carries no set-aside designation and represents a collaborative research initiative between the federal agency and New Mexico Tech's scientific expertise in geobiology and microbial analysis. This award leverages the university's established capabilities in specialized research services and technical analysis for federal agencies.
Description
The PI and a student at NMT will use fish and card-fish to estimate microbial biomass and determine the activity of microbial contaminants. Surface swab samples collected by ooblek PI graham will be sent to the NMT geobiology laboratory and witness coupons prepared with known cleanroom cultures will be collected for organic analysis at gsfc and and microbiological analysis by microscopy at NMT. The PI's lab will perform cell counts on a small number of culture samples to generate preliminary data on growth curves and optimize staining, hybridization. This work will constitute a.master's thesis project.
