About this award
Fayetteville State University (FSU), a historically Black college and university in North Carolina, was awarded a $423.5K cooperative agreement by a civilian federal agency to establish the NASA MUREP Precollege Summer Institute: Cutting-Edge Technologies for Examining Climate Change (FSU-CTECC). The five-year project, with completion targeted for March 2028, will deliver two-week residential STEM summer camps annually to 20 high school students recruited from Cumberland County and surrounding North Carolina counties. The program aims to increase STEM interest among underrepresented and underserved students while equipping them with foundational skills for success in college STEM degree programs and STEM careers through engagement with NASA's Earth Science initiatives.
The FSU-CTECC program leverages partnerships with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Goddard Space Flight Center, along with academic organizations and industry partners, to deliver hands-on STEM workshops and authentic learning experiences. Students will gain exposure to cutting-edge technologies including remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS), drone technology, and three-dimensional printing to address climate change challenges through solution design, data collection and analysis, and drone engineering activities. The cooperative agreement was awarded on a competitive, non-set-aside basis, reflecting FSU's established capabilities in STEM education and technical research as a minority-serving institution.
