To uncover the links between geometric, mathematical and spatial skills, this project follows children from a previously completed longitudinal study into their kindergarten year. Brian Verdine, Ph.D., and a postdoctoral fellow on the original project, will manage the day to day operations of the proposed project including recruiting, ensuring compliance with human subjects regulations, data collection, data analysis, and writing up of results. He will also present papers at conferences. Dr. Verdine will oversee research assistants that he will train to collect, code, and enter data. Testing will be completed on as many of the 80+ children as are identified from the original sample on two measures of spatial skill and two measures of mathematical skill. It is anticipated that children will have to be seen twice at their schools to complete the assessments. All children will be in kindergarten at the time of testing.

Elizabeth Ackert, Ph.D., (Department of Geography) will oversee all aspects of the proposed studies, including data preparation, data analysis, preparation of manuscripts for publication, and conference submissions and presentations for the UCSB portion of the proposed effort. The four main proposed aims are: 1) To investigate associations between neighborhood disadvantage and kin network structure, resources, and function, in order to determine how kin network dynamics vary among residents in more or less disadvantaged neighborhoods. 2) To investigate the indirect ways through which neighborhoods may influence health via kinrelated dynamics. 3) To investigate whether kin network structure, resources, and function moderate associations of neighborhood disadvantage and health. 4) To examine whether associations among neighborhood disadvantage, kin networks, and health vary over the life course. Dr. Ackert will be responsible for coordination of the dataset and scientific oversight of Aims 2 and 4. Specific tasks will involve coding PSID data and conducting data merges (when necessary; such as merging the PSID Child Development Supplement into the master PSID), identifying subsamples for analysis (children and youth, for example), conducting statistical analyses using appropriate software (Stata and R), writing up results, submitting conference proposals, and drafting manuscripts addressing Aims 2 and 4. Within this proposal research team, Dr. Ackert s area of expertise is on children and youth whereas Dr. Spring (Georgia State) has focused on older adults, so Dr. Ackert will be in charge of tasks related to analyses of samples at ages 0-18. She will also supervise a graduate student researcher who will assist in these activities.

A GRADUATE STUDENT WILL BE FUNDED PART-TIME TO ASSIST WITH CUTTING, PROCESSING, AND TRANSCRIBING THE DATA AND WILL COAUTHOR A PAPER WITH PROFESSOR KNOX ON THE MASS APPLICATION TO BODYWORN CAMERA AUDIO. IN ADDITION TO THE TECHNICAL EXTENSIONS, PROFESSOR KNOX WILL FURTHER DEVELOP STATISTICAL THEORY AS NEEDED TO ACCOUNT FOR THE PACKAGE EXTENSIONS AND DOMAIN-SPECIFIC APPLICATIONS. PROFESSOR KNOX WILL ALSO ATTEND PROFESSIONAL MEETINGS TO PRESENT AND DISCUSS RESEARCH WITH PEERS, AND TO OBTAIN FEEDBACK VALUABLE TO ADVANCING THE QUALITY OF PROJECT DELIVERABLES. PROFESSOR KNOX AND THE GRADUATE STUDENT FOR THIS PROJECT WILL WORK CLOSELY WITH THE TEAM AT WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY ON ALL ASPECTS OF PLANNING, IMPLEMENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND WRITING.
