About this agency

The Department of Agriculture Rural Housing Service Community Facilities is a civilian sub-agency that funds rural community infrastructure and facility projects through grants to local governments, school districts, tribal institutions, and other eligible entities. The office administers Project Grants to support the development and improvement of essential community facilities in rural areas.

Since 2011, the agency has obligated $226 million in federal grant funding across 3,765 Project Grant awards to 2,372 distinct recipients. Award volume has declined sharply in recent years: 744 awards in 2022, 130 in 2023, 174 in 2024, 3 in 2025, and 2 year-to-date in 2026. The most recent recorded award date is April 2026. Combined federal and non-federal dollars obligated total $227.8 million.

Grant recipient concentration is highly fragmented. The top five recipients by award count account for only 3 percent of recent awards over the last five years. County of Lee leads by count with 14 awards totaling $599 thousand in federal dollars, followed by Cutler-Orosi Joint Unified School District with 7 awards and $1.2 million federal dollars. Among recipients ranked by federal dollars obligated, Cutler-Orosi Joint Unified School District is the largest at $1.2 million across 7 awards, with Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe University, Salish Kootenai College, Red Lake Nation College, and Sisseton Wahpeton College each receiving approximately $975 thousand to $1 million. The top five recipients by federal dollars represent only 2 percent of recent federal dollars obligated, underscoring the highly dispersed nature of the recipient base. All 3,765 awards are structured as Project Grants with no other assistance types in the portfolio.

No recent contract opportunities or grant opportunities are recorded against the agency or its descendant offices.
