Description of Water Treatment Systems

Description of Water Treatment System

This Mobile Treatment Unit (MTU) was constructed by Lockwood Remediation Technologies, LLC (LRT) on behalf of Tantara Corporation (Tantara) for the project referred to as Demolition Area 1 Groundwater Treatment System – located off base at The Massachusetts Military Reservation in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

The mobile treatment unit (MTU) is capable of treating water at a flow rate of up to 125 gpm.

Groundwater is pumped to the MTU by one (1) 7.5 HP submersible pump (supplied by others) installed in extraction well No. 1 (supplied by others). The pump is controlled by a dedicated variable frequency drive (VFD) contained in Main Control Panel (MCP) located within the MTU. In the event of an alarm condition (i.e. low water pressure or flow from each well exceeding the specification error tolerance) the pump automatically shut down requiring manual restart.

From the pump, water enters a bag filter manifold with three (3) No. 2 single bag filters plumbed in parallel such that two bag filter vessel can be operated while the other remains on standby. During a bag filter change out, one vessel is removed from service while the other two remain in operation so that the MTU never needs to be shut down. Each bag filter housing is included with isolation valves, sample ports and pressure gauges on the influent and effluent piping so that it is clear when a bag filter change out is required. Bag filter housings are aluminum with each rated for maximum flow rate of 100 gpm and 125 PSI for cumulative flow rate of 300 gpm with two bag filter vessels online. From the bag filters, water is discharged to three vessels plumbed in series, the first containing 60 cubic feet (cuft) of ion exchange resin and the second and third containing 2,200 pounds of acid washed virgin liquid phase carbon. Each media vessel is rated for a maximum flow rate of 150 gpm and 75 PSI; for a total maximum cumulative flow rate of 150 gpm. From the MTU water is directed to a recharge gallery (installed by others).

The MTU is enclosed in steel container 40 feet long, 8 feet wide and 9.5 feet tall. This enclosure is fully heated, insulated and provided with lighting. There is also one courtesy outlet for 1-phase 110V within the treatment enclosure.

Water Treatment System Start Up Check List

Before Starting System:

• Check bag filters and change if needed.

• Open shutoff valves on influent and effluent side of bag filters.

• Open shutoff valves on the Resin and Carbon vessels.

• Open valve on the discharge line leading to the recharge gallery.

• Close all sample ports and bleeder valves.

• Pull out all emergency stop buttons.

To activate the MTU:

• Turn on control power to MCP.

• On the system screen touch menu button and go to the overview screen.

• On the overview screen turn the well pump to auto mode.

• Verify set point for pump flow rate.

• To change flow rate, touch target button on PID screen to pull up set point screen. Then enter the desired flow rate and touch the enter button.

• The Pump will start at a preset minimum of 30 Hz then gradually increase until reaching the set point pump.

After System is Operating:

• Open bleeder valve on the top of each bag filter housing until all air is removed.

• Open bleeder valve on the top of each resin vessel until all air is removed.

• Open bleeder valve on the top of each carbon vessel until all air is removed.

• Check system pressure. Ideal operating pressure is less than 35 PSI. IF OPERATING

PRESSURES EXCEED 60 PSI, SHUT SYSTEM DOWN UNTIL OPERATING

PRESSURE IS REDUCED.

• Pump flow should stabilize to set point within 10 minutes.

• Bag filters should be changed when the pressure differential exceeds 5 PSI.

• Media vessels should be backwashed if the pressure differential exceeds 5 PSI.

Main Control Panel Operations

The main control system is accessed via a touch screen on the panel. In order to change any set point on the system through the touch screen, the password below must be entered.

Password: 12345

Once the main control system is accessed, the following screens will be used to interact with the extraction well system.

Screen #1 – Main Menu

The main menu contain five (5) possible options which allow the operator to access live data as well as change various system variables.

Screen #2 – System Overview

The system overview screen allows the operator to place the well pump in “hand” or “auto” as well as set multiple set points for the system. “Hand” mode runs the pump manually. “Auto” mode runs the pump with the specified flow in place. All system set points can be manually altered to maintain ideal system operating conditions.

Screen #3 – Alarms

The Alarms screen logs alarm history detailing the alarm type as well as the time activated/deactivated.

This allows the operator to view a system alarm history.

Screen #4 – Flow, Pressure and Differential Trend

The flow/pressure/differential trend screen allows the operator to view historic system data (flow/pressure/differential) over time in the form of a line graph.

Water Treatment System Shutdown Procedures

To turn off system from the MCP, go to the system overview screen and touch the off button.

In an emergency situation the system can be shut down by pushing the emergency stop buttons located on the control panel.

Operations and Maintenance of Water Treatment System

Submersible Pump:

The operator will need to check the submersible pump to ensure smooth operation. The pump should be running continuously as long as it is energized. If flow becomes slow and turbulent, the operator should check the pumps for sediment buildup in the bottom screens.

Bag Filters:

Three (3) No 2 filter housings will be plumbed in parallel such that two bag filter vessels can be operated while one remains on standby. Each bag filter vessel is rated to 100 gpm (400 gpm total) and 125 PSI and include isolation valves, sample ports and pressure gauges on the influent and effluent piping so that it is clear when a bag filter change out is required. When there is a differential pressure of no more than 5 PSI, the operator will need to complete a bag filter change out. During a bag filter change out, two vessels are opened while one is closed so that water treatment never needs to be shut down. The bag filters are a one-time use only and should be properly disposed of after use.

Resin Vessels:

One (1) resin vessel will contain 60 cuft of Resin Tech SIR-100-HP ion exchange resin. The vessel is rated for 150 gpm and 75 PSI and includes isolations valves, sample ports and pressure gauges on the influent and effluent piping so that it is clear when backwashing is required. When there is a pressure differential of 5 PSI, backwashing should occur. Backwashing is completed by reversing the flow direction at a rate of 200 gpm for 0.5 hours per vessel or when the backwash water is clear. The operator must use a clean water source for backwashing (i.e. a fire hydrant). A resin change out is necessary when breakthrough begins to occur at the effluent sampling port of the resin vessel.

Carbon Vessels:

Two (2) carbon vessels will contain 2,200 pounds of reactivated liquid phase reactivated carbon. The vessels are rated for 150 gpm and 75 PSI (and include isolation valves, sample ports and pressure gauges on the influent and effluent piping so that it is clear when backwashing is required. A carbon change out is necessary when breakthrough begins to occur at the effluent sampling port of the carbon vessel.

NOTE: Regarding Ethernet access to a C-more panel.

If you intend to take advantage of the methods of remote access to the panel, including the web server, PC remote access, FTP, iPhone or iPad app, you need to consider the security exposure in order to minimize the risks to your process and your C-more panel.

Security measures may include password protection, changing the ports exposed on your network, including a VPN in your network, and other methods. Security should always be carefully evaluated for each installation.
