The Committee on Earth Observation Satellites Working Group on Calibration & Validation provides the below definitions for calibration and validation. Reference https://ceos.org/ourwork/workinggroups/wgcv/.
Calibration is the process of quantitatively defining a system’s response to known and controlled signal inputs.
Validation, on the other hand, is the process of assessing, by independent means, the quality of the data products derived from those system outputs.
Elaborating on these terms in the context of SMBA:
NS1 SMBA CDRL NS1-SMBA-CDRL-0001, Revision A
Check the LPD TDMS Server at https://ipdtdms.gsfc.nasa.gov/frontmenu_dsp.cfm to verify that this is the correct version prior to use.
Calibration inputs are electromagnetic (EM) energy from a scene at certain frequencies and the response (outputs) are the integrated energy under a channel spectral response function.
The data products to be validated (i.e., assessed for quality) are:
Raw Data Records (RDR)
Temperature Data Records (TDR)
Sensor Data Records (SDR)
Environmental Data Records (EDR)
Note: Per NS1-SMBA-REQ-0001 section 1.4 and requirement SMBA-93, the instrument will produce RDR files. The NOAA Ground System (NGS) will use RDR data and instrument calibration data to produce higher-level data products such as TDRs, SDRs, EDRs. The CV-1 Cal/Val Plan only needs to describe Contractor activities for validation of RDR and validation of the SMBA calibration data used as inputs for TDRs, SDRs, EDRs. The document does not need to describe the entirety of TDR, SDR, and EDR validation, as those processes are controlled by
NOAA.
