About this file
This document contains questions and answers from an industry day event regarding a forthcoming solicitation for the DSU-33X/X sensor. Key details include that the solicitation will be released by the Department of the Air Force Materiel Command Lifecycle Management Center at Hill Air Force Base for a new terrain mapping and height-of-burst sensor compatible with current DSU-33 munitions and the JDAM kit. The sensor must maintain external dimensions and weight as previous versions while allowing innovation. Threshold requirements include improved height-of-burst terrain mapping capability and tolerance above 50 feet, with selectability. Qualification testing, flight testing, and anti-tamper measures will be required. Responses to the industry day questions provide additional technical requirements and test plans.

Date Question Answer Posted to FBO on
1 8/17/2016 Why is CMBRE connectivity required for the DSU-33X/X? To obtain sensor status information. 9/1/2016
2 8/17/2016 Will the sensor be backward compatible to the DSU-33D/B?
Yes. The DSU-33X/X must fit all current DSU-33D/B compatible munitions.
9/1/2016
3 8/17/2016 Is there a specific RS422 pin-out? Yes, but it is not finalized. 9/1/2016
4 8/17/2016 How will the DSU-33X/X connect to the JDAM Kit?
Reference DSU-38 for baseline. Innovation is encouraged.
9/1/2016
5 8/17/2016 Is there a message generated by the JDAM kit telling the sensor/fuze to height-of-burst
(HOB)?
No. 9/1/2016
6 8/17/2016 Are there any parts that need to remain common to previous versions?
Internally no. The external form and FZU cable must remain the same. Weight should be kept as close as possible to previous versions.
9/1/2016
7 8/17/2016 Are ROHS COTS parts allowed in the sensor?
Yes. However, all parts must meet current MIL- STDs.
9/1/2016
8 8/17/2016 Will there be power provided by the platform? Yes. 9/1/2016 9 8/17/2016 Is a battery still required? Yes. 9/1/2016
10 8/17/2016 Is accepting the HOB setting at weapon release/battery initiation acceptable? Yes. 9/1/2016
11 8/17/2016 Does the Next-Generation Area Attack Weapon have a height-of-burst need above 50 feet?
Yes. 9/1/2016
12 8/17/2016 What is driving the height-of-burst requirement?
The Air Force Research Lab at Eglin Air Force Base is interested in height-of-burst functions beyond the capability of currently fielded sensors.
9/1/2016
13 8/17/2016 What are the top three threshold priorities?
HOB terrain-mapping> HOB tolerance> selectability.
9/1/2016
14 8/17/2016 Are there subject matter experts within the USG that can provide information on current or past similar efforts?
Yes. 9/1/2016
15 8/17/2016 What is wanted for terrain-mapping?
The ability to distinguish between obstacles (trees, roof tops, etc…) and true ground.
9/1/2016
16 8/17/2016 Is there a preference for 1 foot or 1 meter accuracy? To be determined. Cost is a factor. 9/1/2016
17 8/17/2016 Is +/- 3 feet performance tolerance the threshold?
Performance should be similar to previous sensor versions.
9/1/2016
18 8/17/2016 Will classified documents be made available for review?
The appropriate classified materials will be made available to those who are cleared to receive classified docs no later than RFP release.
9/1/2016
19 8/17/2016 If the DSU-33X/X is more capable, will it be used in other applications? Yes, there is potential for wider application. 9/1/2016 20 8/17/2016 What platform will be used for the initial OFP? F-15E. 9/1/2016 21 8/17/2016 Is the contractor responsible for the integration portion? Yes. 9/1/2016 22 8/17/2016 Will there be DCS or FMS? Yes. 9/1/2016 23 8/17/2016 Does the USG own any of the tooling? No. 9/1/2016
