About this file
This document contains a plumbing inspection report for Alcatraz Island and details of a related federal contract opportunity to stabilize the Alcatraz Wharf. The plumbing inspection report identifies various issues with the plumbing systems on Alcatraz Island such as exposed and corroded pipes, missing valves and handles, unsecured lines, and lack of labeling and records. It provides recommendations for addressing code violations, repairing leaks, replacing corroded materials, adding supports and securing lines. The related federal contract opportunity is issued by the National Park Service to repair and seismically strengthen the concrete wharf on Alcatraz Island, including repairing historic steel-cased concrete piles, beams and slabs, and adding new seismic resisting elements to bring the wharf up to Risk Category III standards.

Filter to prevent any debris or mussels from getting in to the system.

Recommendation: Install new shut-off valves or order and install new handles.

4.- We found that the existing sewer and water system is not properly installed and not up to code because the pipes are on top of each other without proper support.
Recommendation: Check the entire water and sewer system to install the proper supports and straps.
5.- There are a few sections where they used different types of material like ABS, PVC, schedule 40 and schedule 80. This line appears to be coming from the sewer containing areas that pump to the boat transfer section.
Recommendation: Remove section and replace with PVC schedule 80 pipe and fittings and install proper strap clamps.

Recommendation: Remove steel elbow and replace it with PVC schedule 80 or galvanized pipe and fittings to prevent rust.
9 | Page
4.- A few wall toilets support brackets shows excessive rust at bolts and point of connections.
Recommendation: Replace support bolt with stainless steel and replace brackets if necessary.

11 | Page
8.- Someone drill a hole at the main sewer line close to the holding tank in the mechanical room.
Recommendation: Removal of damaged section and install a new clean-out.
9.- There is no record of condition for the ejector pump at holding tank in the mechanical room.
Recommendation: Have a service technician inspect the existing pumps to see the conditions and/or replace to prevent any future problems.
10.- One of the main vents through the roof line does not have a roof/jack and the water is causing damage to the wood and the shingles around it.
Recommendation: Install a new roof/jack to all sewer vents and if necessary replace the damaged wood around the pipes.
11.- In the attic area above the mechanical room we noticed that the fresh water tank does not have an overflow drain and is causing water damage in the mechanical room.
Recommendation: Install a new overflow drain line outside the bathroom area that is visible for maintenance people to be able to see whether it’s pumping from transfer boat.
