Section 954 – Obliteration of Abandoned Trailways

Description

954.01 Work. This work consists of obliteration of trailways, construction of drainage structures, and reestablishment of natural drainage patterns and vegetation.

Construction

954.02 General. Obliterate trailways at the locations NOTED ON THE TRAIL LOG or DESIGNATED ON THE GROUND.

954.03 Trail Closure. Block trailway entrances to traffic by placing rocks, logs, branches, and duff across the trailway. Place rocks, logs, branches, and duff to conceal the abandoned trailway and discourage future use. Use materials that are available in the areas to be obliterated. Live trees under 5 inches in diameter may be cut if no other material is available.

954.04 Drainage Structures. Leave existing drainage structures on the abandoned trail segments in place unless designated for removal.

Construct drainage structures at locations NOTED ON THE TRAIL LOG.

Construct check dams of rock where suitable rocks are available within 200 feet either direction along the trail, within 100 feet uphill, or within 50 feet downhill, of the check dam location. Where suitable rocks are not available, use native timber unless otherwise NOTED ON THE TRAIL LOG. Do not backfill behind check dams unless otherwise NOTED ON THE TRAIL LOG.
