VEGETATIVE SPECIFICATION

272. BERMUDAGRASS SOLID SODDING

1. SCOPE

This work consists of furnishing labor, equipment, material and solid sodding bermudagrass on designated areas.

2. MATERIALS

The solid sod will be obtained from adapted bermudagrass that is dense, well rooted and vigorous.

The contractor shall provide the contracting officer representative free access to the source for the purpose of inspection.

Fertilizer shall be a 1-1-1 ratio in a pelleted form and uniformly mixed. Labeling or analysis records shall be in accordance with the Oklahoma Fertilizer Law. Where fertilizer is furnished from bulk storage, the contractor shall furnish a supplier's certification of analysis and weight.

If specified in Section 7, wire netting shall be used to anchor slab (solid) sod in place on certain slopes. It shall be 1 or 2-inch poultry wire. It shall be held in place over the solid sod with stakes or metal rods 12 inches long, bent on one end to hold wire in place, and spaced not more than 3 feet apart.

3. HARVESTING REQUIREMENTS

Top growth greater than 2 inches in height shall be removed before harvesting. The sod shall be cut into slabs a minimum of 10 inches wide, and a minimum thickness of 3/4 inch excluding top growth and be free of undesirable weedy vegetation. Sod should have a compact root mat to assure mechanical strength. The soil at the source site will be moist to the depth the sod is cut. Sod will be removed immediately after being cut, be protected from the sun, wind, and freezing temperatures and kept moist until planted. It shall be planted within 48 hours of harvesting.

4. SITE PREPARATION

The soil where the slab sod will be placed will be tilled, friable, and moist to at least 2 inches depth.

If this condition already exists, it will not be necessary to repeat. Fertilizer shall be uniformly applied at not less than 40 pounds of nitrogen, 40 pounds of phosphate (P2O5), and 40 pounds of potash (K2O) per acre.

NRCS-1/06 272-1

OKLAHOMA

5. PLANTING

Solid sod can be planted at any time of the year.

Solid sod shall be placed on the tilled, moist soil by hand, soil side down, in rows at right angles to the slope. Each slab shall be packed tightly against the edge of adjoining slabs of sod in the row.

They shall be placed so that joints are not continuous from one row to another. All openings and joints shall be filled with fertile, friable soil. After the sod slabs have been placed and the joints filled, they shall be rolled or tamped for a firm contact with the soil. The outside edge of the slab sodded area will be flush with the ground level.

If tie down wire netting is specified in Section 7, it will be applied at this time.

The area will then be watered (on the same day it is planted) at the rate of not less than 3 gallons per square yard. The water will be distributed evenly and uniformly without erosion.

6. MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT

For items of work for which specific unit prices are established in the contract, bermudagrass solid sodding will be measured to the nearest square yard. Payment for solid sodding will be made at the contract unit price. Such payment will constitute full compensation for all labor, materials, equipment and all other items necessary and incidental to the performance of the work.

Compensation for any item of work described in the contract but not listed in the bid schedule will be included in the payment for the item of work to which it is made subsidiary. Such items and the items to which they are made subsidiary are identified in Section 7 of this specification.

(2) The solid sod shall be watered as specified in paragraph 5.

(3) To provide a bond between the solid sod and the soil, the area to be sodded shall be tilled to a depth of 4 inches and fertilized at the rate of 40 pounds of nitrogen, 40 pounds of phosphate (P2O5), and 40 pounds of potash (K2O) per acre. Fertilizer shall be placed uniformly over the area.
