About this file

This is a specification document for miscellaneous rough carpentry work associated with the Rhode Island Army National Guard's Building T-18 renovation project at Camp Varnum in Narragansett, Rhode Island. The specification outlines materials and construction standards for framing with dimension lumber, wood blocking, cants, nailers, wood furring, wood sleepers, PVC exterior trim, composite decking and fastening systems, composite porch railings, and plywood wall and floor panels. Key products include AZEK Building Products TimberTech composite decking (1 by 5-1/2 inches) with matching fascia boards and stair risers, vinyl railings at 42 inches high with standard support rails and balusters, and PVC trim boards in 1-inch and 5/4-inch nominal thickness. All lumber must comply with DOC PS 20 standards with a maximum moisture content of 19 percent for 2-inch nominal thickness or less, and must be graded by agencies certified by the ALSC Board of Review. Wood-preservative-treated materials must meet AWPA U1 standards with Use Category designations based on application, and fire-retardant-treated materials must achieve a flame spread index of 25 or less per ASTM E 84 testing. Plywood wall panels must be DOC PS 1, Exposure 1, C-D Plugged, fire-retardant treated, with minimum 5/8-inch nominal thickness, while flooring must utilize Sturdy-I-Floor panels with Class II or C flame spread classification.

Material delivery and storage requirements mandate that lumber be stacked flat with spacers to allow air circulation and protected from weather with waterproof sheeting. Certified wood from FSC-accredited forests is required, and all treated materials must include manufacturer certifications and warranties. Product data submittals are required for each type of process and factory-fabricated product, including documentation from chemical treatment manufacturers certifying compliance with specifications and physical property testing results. The specification references Section 017419 for construction waste management requirements and mandates that all materials bearing classification markings be representative of tested materials. Installation products for PVC trim include structural and flexible adhesive options and gap filler compounds. The project timeline indicates construction is anticipated to commence in September 2026, with substantial completion required 16 months after the start date and final completion within 60 days thereafter.

A. Set carpentry to required levels and lines, with members plumb, true to line, cut, and fitted. Fit carpentry to other construction; scribe and cope as needed for accurate fit. Locate[ furring,] nailers, blocking, and similar supports to comply wi...
B. Where wood-preservative-treated lumber is installed adjacent to metal decking, install continuous flexible flashing separator between wood and metal decking.
C. Framing Standard: Comply with AF&PA's WCD 1, "Details for Conventional Wood Frame Construction," unless otherwise indicated.
D. Install plywood backing panels by fastening to studs; coordinate locations with utilities requiring backing panels. Install fire-retardant treated plywood backing panels with classification marking of testing agency exposed to view.
E. Metal Framing Anchors: Install metal framing anchors to comply with manufacturer's written instructions. Install fasteners through each fastener hole.
F. Do not splice structural members between supports unless otherwise indicated.
G. Provide blocking and framing as indicated and as required to support facing materials, fixtures, specialty items, and trim.
1. Provide metal clips for fastening gypsum board or lath at corners and intersections where framing or blocking does not provide a surface for fastening edges of panels. Space clips not more than 16 inches (406 mm) o.c.
H. Provide fire blocking in furred spaces, stud spaces, and other concealed cavities as indicated and as follows:
1. Fire block furred spaces of walls, at each floor level, at ceiling, and at not more than 96 inches (2438 mm) o.c. with solid wood blocking or noncombustible materials accurately fitted to close furred spaces.
2. Fire block concealed spaces of wood-framed walls and partitions at each floor level, at ceiling line of top story, and at not more than 96 inches (2438 mm) o.c. Where fire blocking is not inherent in framing system used, provide closely fitted sol...
