27 Jun 2017
RWH (Rotary Wing Helmet)
Issue/support/recover/RESET ALSE in the OEF Camouflage Pattern, including:
- PSGC, body armor covers, pockets
- Portable Helicopter Oxygen Delivery System
- Overwater survival equipment
Design Goals:
• Maintain Impact Protection
• Improve Field of View increase situational awareness (SA)
• Decrease Weight less weight / less bulk KPP
• Improve Stability safety and SA
Head is moved 3/16” closer to the front of the helmet shell.
3/16” of Energy Absorbing Liner is moved from the forehead region and added to the rear of the helmet.
Impact Performance was maintained, tested and verified by Gentex and
USAARL.
Average Lateral FOV was improved by 7.4 degrees.
Improve Field of View
3/16 inch
3/16 inch
Overall FOV improvement across all angles and sizes will be roughly 3.2 degrees.
RWH Maxillofacial Shield (MFS)
Moving the Head forward 3/16”, also means moving the Nose forward 3/16”
Resulting in a slight re-design of the MFS
Removed Hardware
Decrease Weight / Decrease Bulk
Weight Savings
– Plenum, Blown Air Port,4 Screws = 28.5 g
– Some weight will go back in due to the Liner being filled and the hole in the shell, with an approximate weight savings of 20 grams total.
– New Retention = 26 g
– New Suspension = 8 g
– Total Weight Savings = 54 g ( 20 + 26 + 8 = 54 grams)
Improved Stability New Retention
New Retention
Ear Cups attached to Ear Domes for Weight Savings
Optional “Lower” Lip Chinstrap:
Greatly improves helmet stability.
New Retention
When Both chinstraps are used
Forward Rotation of the helmet is almost eliminated.
Situational Awareness
Helmet Tracking Kit HTK coupled with a helmet mounted display
Provides Other Pilot’s Line of Sight (OPL) and 3D landing symbology for improved Situational Awareness
