HIGH-PERFORMANCE COATINGS

PART 1 GENERAL

1.1 SUMMARY

A. Section includes high performance coatings and special preparation of surfaces. Specific requirements will be outlined by each individual DO.

1.3 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS: Special requirements for high performance paint may be demanded by an individual DO. The following performance criteria may be required. It is the responsibility of the contractor to find a high-performance coating that meets the requirements of the government in these special situations.

1.4 SUBMITTALS

A. Section 01300 - Submittal Procedures: Submittal procedures.

B. Product Data: Submit data indicating coating materials and performance ratings when the manufacturers data have not been submitted for review with the basic contract C. Submit samples illustrating colors available for selection.

D. Manufacturer's Installation Instructions: Submit special procedures, perimeter conditions requiring special attention as specified by the manufacturer.

E. Manufacturer's Certificate: Certify products meet or exceed specified requirements as illustrated in the DO.

1.5 CLOSEOUT SUBMITTALS

A. Operation and Maintenance Data: Submit maintenance and cleaning requirements for coatings, repair and patching techniques.

1.6 QUALIFICATIONS

A. Manufacturer: Company specializing in manufacturing products specified in this section with minimum three years documented experience.

B. Applicator: Individual must be fully trained and experienced in application of special products, otherwise someone specializing in the task must be used.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.1 HIGH PERFORMANCE COATINGS

A. Furnish materials in accordance with industrial standards as outlined in the DO.

2.2 COMPONENTS

A. Coatings - General: Furnish complete multi-coat systems formulated and recommended by manufacturer for applications indicated, in thicknesses indicated; number of coats specified does not include primer or filler coat. Provide the following information when required.

1. Lead content: None.

2. Chromium content, as zinc chromate or strontium chromate: None.

3. Maximum VOC content: As required by applicable regulations.

4. Colors: As selected from manufacturer's standard colors.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Section 01300 - Administrative Requirements: Coordination and project conditions.

B. Verify substrate surfaces are ready to receive work as instructed by coating manufacturer. Obtain and follow manufacturer's instructions for examination and testing of substrates.

3.2 PREPARATION

A. Clean surfaces of loose foreign matter.

B. Remove substances that would bleed through finished coatings. When removal is not possible, seal surface with shellac.

C. Remove finish hardware, fixture covers, and accessories and store.

D. Existing Painted and Sealed Surfaces:

1. Strip existing paint and coatings from surface.

2. Remove loose, flaking, and peeling paint. Feather edge and sand smooth edges of chipped paint.

3. Clean with mixture of trisodium phosphate and water to remove surface grease and foreign matter.

E. Galvanized Surfaces: Remove surface contamination and oils and wash with solvent.

F. Ferrous Metal:

1. Solvent clean.

2. Remove loose rust, loose mill scale, and other foreign substances using hand tools according to SSPC-SP 2, power tools according to SSPC-SP 3, or by blasting according to SSPC-SP 6 or -SP 7.

G. Protect adjacent surfaces and materials not receiving coating from overspray; mask when necessary to provide adequate protection. Repair damage.

3.4 CLEANING

A. Execute final cleaning prior to final project assessment.

B. Collect waste material which may constitute fire hazard, place in closed metal containers, and remove daily from site.

C. Clean surfaces immediately of overspray, splatter, and excess material.

D. After coating has cured, clean and replace finish hardware, fixtures, and fittings previously removed.

3.5 SCHEDULE: Supply a application schedule when more than one coating, or more than one variation of a single coating is required.
