SECTION 09950 - WALLCOVERINGS

UHHZ 100240W, Paint IDIQ

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.01

DESCRIPTION OF WORK:

Types of wallcovering required include the following:

Vinyl wallcovering.

1.02

SUBMITTALS:

Samples: Submit 2 ea. 6-inch long samples of each type and color of edge molding specified.

Submit 2 ea. 6-inch long samples of each type and color of rubber base specified.

Submit 2 ea. 1 ft. square samples of each color sisal wall covering specified.

1.03 TRANSPORTATION AND STORAGE: Receive materials in manufacturer's original unopened packaging. Store according to manufacturer's recommendations.

1.04.

JOB CONDITIONS:

A.

Maintain ambient temperature in areas of installation prior to, and after applications of materials, according to manufacturer's recommendations.

B.

Illuminate areas of installation using the building's permanent lighting system; temporary lighting alone will not be acceptable.

PART 2 – PRODUCTS

2.01

VINYL WALL COVERING:

Contractor shall provide wallcovering meeting requirements of Federal Specification CCC-W-408A, Type II and CFFA Spec CFFA-W-101-D, Type II. Design Basis is Koroseal Collage wallcovering as manufactured by the RJF International Corporation. Manufacturer's code for Koroseal Collage Wallcovering is K321-xx series and is available in 29 colorwways.

2.02

ACCESSORY ITEMS:

Adhesives: Provide manufacturer's recommended adhesive and sealer, produced expressly for use with selected wallcovering on substrate. Provide materials that contain mildew inhibitors and are non-staining to wallcovering.

Primer: Provide a mildew-resistant primer, such as "Kilz," or an approved equal.

C.

Vinyl Edge Moldings: As recommended by manufacturer to complement wall covering provided.

Adhesive for molding: Provide contact adhesive recommended by molding manufacturer.

D.

Rubber Base: As recommended by manufacturer to match vinyl edge moldings provided. Outside corners shall be pre-molded units.

Adhesive for rubber base: Provide contact adhesive recommended by manufacturer.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.01

PREPARATION:

Acclimatize wallcovering materials by removing from packaging in area of installation not less than 24 hours before application.

Remove switch plates, wall plates, and surface-mounted fixtures in areas where wallcovering is to be applied.

C.

Clean walls to ensure proper bonding of adhesives.

D. Wall surfaces shall be free from defects and imperfections that could show through the finished covered surface.

E. Sand-finished plaster shall be smoothed, cinder or cement blocks shall be plastered, or otherwise rendered smooth, and old wall coverings shall be removed.

F. For drywall construction, manufacturer’s recommended primer should be used before application of wallcovering for ease of future removal.

G.

Repair holes and broken areas in gypsum board substrate with spackling compound and new gypsum board as required. Sand smooth.

H. Glossy surfaces shall either be sanded to dull surface, or a coat of manufacturer’s recommended primer applied prior to installation of wallcovering.

I. If there is any evidence of mildew, substrate shall be checked with a suitable “Moisture Meter”. Moisture shall not exceed 4%. Mildew must be removed and the wall surface treated to inhibit further mildew growth.

J. Primers must contain mildew inhibitors and be applied according to manufacturer's instructions.

K. All painted surfaces should be evaluated for the possibility of pigment bleed-through. If there is any possibility, a coat of sealer, recommended by the manufacturer, should be applied before application of the wallcovering.

L.

Do no install vinyl wallcovering over oil-based wood stains as a bleed-through may occur.

INSTALLATION:

A. Vinyl Wallcovering:

1. Wallcovering shall be installed by experienced workers and contractors in strict accordance with the manufacturer’s printed instructions using vinyl wallcovering adhesive recommended by the manufacturer (WHEAT PASTE SHALL NOT BE USED). It is absolutely imperative that the installer read the manufacturer’s instruction sheet in each roll before installing the vinyl wallcovering. Permanent building light shall be available for installation.

2. Installer, before cutting, shall examine pattern and color and determine that they are the correct pattern and color as specified.

3. Installer shall install each roll in sequence starting with largest roll number and each strip in same sequence as cut from roll. If necessary, trim to assure color uniformity.

4. Bring material six (6) inches around inside and outside corners being sure to fir into corners to avoid bridging or spanning.

5. Wallcovering shall be smoothed to the hanging surface with a stiff bristled sweep brush or a flexible broad-knife to eliminate ari bubbles.

6. Remove excess adhesive along finished seam immediately after each wallcovering strip is applied. Use of clean, warm water, a natural sponge and clean towels are recommended for this use.

7.

Where a suspended ceiling is to be installed (by others), install top of wall covering true and level 2" A.F.F or as directed by Government. Where a furred ceiling remains, install fabric flush against the ceiling with edge molding.

8.

Install rubber base in all areas from which vinyl or rubber base was removed.

3.02

ADJUST AND CLEAN:

Replace removed plates and fixtures; verify cut edges of wall-coverings are completely concealed.

Remove surplus materials, rubbish, and debris resulting from wall-covering installation upon completion of work, and leave areas of installation in neat, clean condition.
