3.15.3 Requirements

3.15.3.1 All surface preparation and painting to be done

by a QP-1 certified contractor.

3.15.3.2 Prior to apply the coating systems, complete all

potential structural steel repairs, and all access cuts, NDT testing, and hull plate inserts below the waterline that have been called out in other items of these specifications.

3.15.3.3 The existing coating system is an Ameron System

applied during ship’s construction; all new paint to be Ameron brand only for compatibility and in conformity with ship’s Paint Schedule.

3.15.3.4 All preparations and painting to be accomplished

in accordance with the paragraphs for “General

Requirements” and “Quality Assurance” in references

3.15.1.1 and 3.15.1.2. Use reference 3.15.1.3 for exact Ameron product to use in a specific area, along with coating details such as number of coats and DFT.

Use reference 3.15.1.3 as an aid in determining approximate area to be coated.

3.15.3.5 Surface Preparation to be accomplished using

water jetting, in accordance with reference 3.15.1.4;

grit blasting is not acceptable.

3.15.3.6 Accomplish Low- Pressure Water Cleaning and/ or

High- Pressure Water Cleaning, as required, to obtain a minimum WJ-4 surface condition, in order to apply a

“maintenance system” to all surfaces. Abraid aged epoxy if needed prior to applying topcoats. Cleaning and painting to be co-ordinated with on- site Ameron paint representative and QP-1 certified contractor.

3.15.3.7 Use Ultrahigh-Pressure Water Jetting, to a WJ-2

condition, to all areas having loose paint, not tightly adhered to substrate. Apply a “complete” coating system to these areas. For bidding purposes, estimate 250 square feet of miscellaneous freeboard locations will require a “complete system”. If locations requiring a “complete system” exceed this amount, it will be the topic of additional work.

3.15.3.8 Surface preparation to include feathering back

edges of remaining paint in all areas where Ultrahigh

Pressure Water Jetting or abraiding of aged epoxy is carried out.

3.15.3.9 After surface preparation and immediately prior

to application of paint, accomplish chloride checks at a total of 10 different locations on freeboard/ superstructure; locations to be selected by COTR.

Maximum chloride measurements shall not exceed 5 ug/cm2. If chloride measurements exceed this level, the areas shall be re-cleaned, then re-tested until the chloride measurement does not exceed 5 ug/cm2

3.15.3.10 Rewash the entire hull with a 3000 psi fresh

water wash after all surface preparation has been carried out and all chloride measurements are acceptable.

3.15.3.11 Prepare and coat the entire Freeboard with a

“maintenance system”, to include areas receiving a

“complete system”, if required. The Freeboard consists of all areas of the hull from the top of the boottop to the intersection of the hull with the Main and 01 Decks, to include the bulwark in the bow area.

On the port side the freeboard extends to the 01 Deck from the bow to FR82, and to Main Deck from FR 82 to the transom. On the starboard side the freeboard extends to the 01 Deck from the bow to FR 47, and to

Main Deck from FR 47 to transom.

3.15.3.12 A “maintenance system” for the Freeboard consists

of one coat Amercoat 229T, 4 mils DFT.

3.15.3.13 A “complete system” for the Freeboard consists of

the 3- coat system identified in reference 3.15.1.3.

3.15.4 Quality Assurance

3.15.4.1 Conduct joint inspection of hull with Ameron

Coatings Company representative and COTR after hull has been high-pressure water-washed. Provide detailed

“Paint Plan” to COTR, in accordance with Reference

3.15.1.2, prior to start of surface preparation.

3.15.4.2 Conduct joint temperature and humidity readings

with Ameron representative prior to each coat of paint applied.

3.15.4.3 Conduct joint inspection of Dry Film Thickness

gaging with Ameron representative after each coat of paint is applied.
