How did you collaborate?
Collaboration began by uniting the Caravan Lab and WDFW teams in a roadmapping session to flesh out the strategic approach. We used information from the session to create a Project Brief that guided story and production from start to finish. The subject matter was sensitive and potentially controversial - it was important for our teams to collaborate on an approach that could build trust across groups and not erode it. To incorporate trust building we allocated additional time for our collaborations with both WDFW and the people in the film, taking care to ensure all questions about the process were adequately answered and subjects didn’t feel rushed or pigeon-holed. It gave us great satisfaction after the final delivery that all people in the video felt their voice was authentically represented and were proud of their participation.
How was the story developed?
A key objective of this project was to generate empathy across groups of people who historically were at odds. We knew the story would have to feel authentic - any whiff of “propaganda” would turn our audience off. We also knew that casting was paramount. We needed to show people who were true representatives of their groups, who were considered trustworthy and relatable by their people, but who were also open to new ways of thinking that put collaboration above confrontation. Once we found the right people we created a story that pulled together vignettes of each group in a cohesive whole, giving an intimate look at who they were as people, what motivated them, and why they believed a collaborative approach was the best way forward. In the process, the viewer sees that what these groups have in common is much greater than what divides them.
Did you set up a review process / what was the review process?
Our review process was thorough and tightly woven into the production process. It was important for us to bring WDFW in as production partners in this project and we ensured they had multiple opportunities to provide feedback and ideas in the making of the video. To provide them with efficient points for feedback we created a deliverable list for review that included: thematic outlines, production plans for each shoot, script, audio-only edit, rough edit, fine edit, and final edit.
This approach eliminated surprises and mismatches in vision, and ensured the final product adhered to the plan devised during the roadmapping session.
What journalistic skills were employed by the team?
We believe active listening is the number one step in any creative project. For this project and its subject matter sensitivities, it was crucial for us to listen to WDFW’s experience working with the various groups, to locate where the pinch points were, and to find the opportunities for generating empathy and understanding. Research skills and attention to detail were important to ensure accuracy as well as inclusivity and appropriate representation. We used storytelling to prime viewers to find connections across the groups and promote empathy and a spirit of collaboration.
If applicable, how was the team built?
The team was built to incorporate expertise in the subject matter and a deep understanding across the various livelihoods and racial groups. The team drew from our experience producing inclusive storylines, resulting in a final product in which all stakeholders felt seen, valued, and authentically represented.
What communication was utilized in the process?
We used a variety of digital resources for efficient communication, including collaborative software to track progress on deliverables, web-based reviewing tools for video edits, and held regular zoom and in-person meetings to demonstrate progress and to discuss next steps and opportunities.
