1. SCOPE

1.1. GENERAL SCOPE

This appendix establishes the minimum performance, design, fabrication, installation, and test requirements for a small item bin shelving systems, Building 400, 409, ad 510 at Truax

Field, Wisconsin. The work shall be completed in accordance with this appendix, the Cover Purchase Description (PD), and Air

Force (AF) Drawing NWS912-01, NWS912-02 and NWS912-03. This appendix covers all equipment, materials, and labor necessary to complete installation of the system.

1.2. DEFINITIONS

Back panel - Sheet steel panels attached to the two rear posts of each unit to enclose the back of the unit or form a partition between units placed back-to-back.

Base strip - A steel strip used to enclose the space between the bottom shelf and the floor.

Foot plate - Formed steel plate attached to supporting posts used to anchor the shelving units to the floor and/or mobile aisle carriage.

Shelf - Formed sheet steel which attaches horizontally to supporting posts and supports a load.

Shelf clip - A formed steel piece that provides for attachment of shelves and posts without the use of nuts and bolts.

Shelving unit - A single structure comprising of supporting posts, shelves, and side and back panels. A shelving unit does not exceed in width or depth the nominal maximum dimensions of one shelf.

Side panel - A sheet steel panel attached to the front and rear post to enclose the side of each unit, or as a partition between units placed side by side.

Supporting post - Steel vertical upright member that supports horizontal shelves.

2. APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS

Applicable documents shall be in accordance with Section 2 of the Cover PD.

3. REQUIREMENTS

3.1. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

Storage and/or retrieval operations within the shelving area will be performed manually. The shelving system shall be located so personnel can operate safely in the mobile aisle aisles without damage to shelving units, property stored, or injury to personnel. BS1836 shall be two standalone bays located in Room 117 of Bldg. 409. The shelving system shall consist of:

A. Shelving units

B. Drawers where applicable shown in AF Drawing NWS912-03

C. Nuts, bolts, anchors, and any other items required to install the shelving system.

3.2. PHYSICAL AND PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS

3.2.1. SHELVING LAYOUT

The shelving system shall consist of shelving units in accordance with AF Drawing NWS912-01, NWS912-02, and NWS912-03.

All shelving units shall be arranged in rows by attaching them together end-to-end and/or back-to-back, where applicable. Bin shelving, except for BS1836, is mounted in the mobile aisle systems in Bldg. 400 and 510, specified in Appendix B.

3.2.1.1. SHELVING UNIT DESIGN

Shelving shall be secured to the supporting posts by means of positive engaging clips. All shelving, including parts and assemblies, shall be identical.

3.2.1.2. SAFETY FACTOR

Design and construction of each load bearing component shall assure that the component can sustain the specified load with a minimum safety factor of 1.65 to 1.

3.2.1.3. SHELF DETAILS

3.2.1.3.1. SHELF SIZE

Type D2448 bin shelving, located within the mobile aisle system in Bldg. 510, shall be 24 inches deep and 48 inches wide. Type

BS1836 bin shelving, 2 bays located in B409, shall be 18 inches

TRUAX FIELD – APP D - Page 3 deep and 36 inches wide. BS2436 shall be 24 inches deep and 36 inches wide. BS2436 With Drawers shall be 24 inches deep and 36 inches wide and equipped with 4 modular drawers as shown in AF

Drawing NWS912-03. BS2448 shall be 24 inches deep and 48 inches wide and installed in the mobile aisle system in B400.

3.2.1.4. SHELF CAPACITY

All shelves shall be capable of sustaining a uniformly distributed static load of 400 pounds with an elastic deformation less than 0.875 percent of the unsupported span length, measured with respect to the two ends of the shelf and without any permanent deformation.

3.2.1.4.1. SHELF DESIGN

Plain shelf edges shall be flanged down on all sides with flange between 1-1/8 to 1-1/2 inches, with not less than one additional return flange on each side.

3.2.1.4.2. SHELF CLIPS

Shelf clips shall be provided in sufficient quantity to secure each of the four corners of each shelf to all four supporting posts. The shelf clips shall be designed to preclude the possibility of accidental disengagement of the clips from the post or the shelves under loaded conditions. The shelf clips shall allow for the spacing of the shelf to be changed with minimum disturbance to surrounding shelves and shelving units.

Shelf clips shall be capable of being changed with no more than a rubber mallet.

3.2.1.5. SUPPORTING POSTS

3.2.1.5.1. SUPPORTING POST SIZE

The supporting posts for D2448 shall be a nominal 144 inches high. The supporting posts for BS1836, BS2436, BS2436 with

Drawers, and BS2448 shall be a nominal 87 inches high.

3.2.1.5.2. SUPPORTING POST CAPACITY

Each front and back supporting post of Type D2448 shall have a minimum capacity of 3,200 pounds based on 18-inch shelf spacing without any visible evidence of permanent deformations. Posts of

Type BS1836 shall have a minimum capacity of 1,600 pounds without any visible evidence of permanent deformations. Posts of

Type BS2436 and BS2448 shall have a minimum capacity of 2,400 pounds without any visible evidence of permanent deformations.

Posts of Type BS2436 with drawers shall have a minimum capacity of 3,200 pounds without any visible evidence of permanent deformations.

3.2.1.5.3. SUPPORTING POSTS DESIGN

Mounting holes for clips shall be provided on the supporting posts. Mounting holes shall permit adjustment of shelf height on either 1-inch or 1 1/2-inch increments. Holes shall be provided as required for attachment of all back and end panels.

Supporting posts shall be provided at all four corners of all shelving units. Common supporting posts may be used at adjacent corners of single- or double-faced racks.

3.2.1.5.4. SUPPORTING POST TYPE

The front supporting posts shall be either beaded or box type as defined by the Shelving Manufacturers Association. Supporting posts shall be continuous.

3.2.1.6. BACK PANELS

Back panels shall have either predrilled or punched mounting holes which match up to mating holes in the supporting posts.

Back panels shall be made of metal and shall fully enclose the back of the shelving unit from the floor to the top of the unit.

One continuous panel from top to bottom shall be used. Back-to-back shelving units shall share a single, common back panel between each unit. The back panels shall be secured to the supporting posts. Shelves shall not be used to secure the back panels into position. Screws used to secure the back panel shall not prohibit the installation of shelves. Back panels of a single row of shelving shall include extra screws or equivalent to prevent gaps and ripples vertically and horizontally between other back panels and/or the supporting posts.

3.2.1.7. SIDE PANELS

Side panels shall have either predrilled or punched mounting holes to match up to mating holes in the supporting posts or shall be factory welded to supporting posts. Side panels shall fully enclose the ends of a shelving unit and shall extend from the top of the shelving unit to the floor. Side-by-side shelving units shall share a single common side panel between each unit.

3.2.1.8. BASE STRIP

A steel strip shall be provided and installed on each shelving unit between the bottom shelf and the mobile aisle carriage or floor where applicable

3.2.1.9. FOOT PLATES

Each supporting post shall have a foot plate attached and shall be secured to the mobile aisle carriage or floor. The foot plates shall distribute the weight of a fully loaded shelving unit over the carriage/floor. Foot plates shall be positioned to not interfere with erection of adjoining units and still provide ease of access for anchoring procedure. Foot plates shall be concealed behind the base strips.

3.2.1.10. ASSEMBLY

The Contractor shall assemble, on site, all shelving units including bracing, panels (side and back), and shelves as specified in this appendix and shown on AF Drawing NWS912-01, NWS912-02, and NWS912-03 in the quantities necessary to meet the storage requirements specified.

3.2.1.11. ALIGNMENT

After assembly, the shelving units shall be capable of maintaining the same position in a loaded, partially loaded, or empty capacity. Alignment of each row of shelving units shall be in all three directions, down each row of shelving units, from row to row, and vertically for each shelving unit face.

3.2.1.11.1. AISLE ALIGNMENT

Shelving unit face alignment shall be maintained down each row within 1/8 inch from one shelving unit to the next.

3.2.1.11.2. SHELVING UNIT VERTICAL ALIGNMENT

Each shelving unit face shall be plumb to within 1/4 inch from the floor to the top of the unit. Each supporting post shall be plumb to within 1/4 inch when examined from any direction. All shims used shall be secured beneath the foot plate. The shims shall be the same size as the foot plate and shall have a hole(s) to correspond with the hole(s) in the foot plate for anchoring.

3.2.1.12. COLOR

The contractor shall submit a color chart for approval by Base personnel at the Post Award Technical Information Meeting

(PATIM).

3.2.1.13. MODULAR DRAWERS

3.2.1.13.1. DRAWER DIMENSIONS

The inside drawer dimensions shall be nominal 22 inches +/- 1 inch deep by 33 inches +/- 1 inch wide.

3.2.1.13.2. DRAWER HEIGHTS

The height of the sides and back wall of the drawer shall not be less than 48 percent of the drawer front height. The drawer front height shall be the same as the usable height. The quantity of each drawer height type and the drawer configuration shall be as indicated on AF Drawing NWS912-03.

3.2.1.13.3. DRAWER LOAD CAPACITY

Each drawer shall have a minimum capacity of 400 pounds. When fully loaded with 400 pounds, all drawers shall be capable of being opened and closed without jamming or twisting of the carriage. When fully loaded, an open drawer shall not exhibit deflection greater than 5/8-inch from its closed position, when measured from the floor to the middle of the front of the drawer.

3.2.1.13.4. DRAWER PUSH-PULL FORCES

Excessive force shall not be required to move a drawer when loaded to the maximum capacity. The drawers shall remain closed and not slide open when the carriage is put into motion, during motion, or when stopping.

3.2.1.13.5. DRAWER PULL/LABEL-HOLDING SYSTEM

Each drawer front shall have an aluminum drawer pull/label holding system. The drawer pull/label-holding system shall be designed to accept a label at least one inch high. The label-holding system shall have a clear plastic shield covering a paper label, with plastic or aluminum end caps that provide an

TRUAX FIELD – APP D - Page 7 enclosed label system. There shall be no sharp protrusions on any part of the drawer pull/label-holding system.

3.2.1.13.6. DRAWER STOPS

Each drawer shall be equipped with drawer stops to prevent over-travel of the drawer when fully extended. These safety stops shall prevent the drawer from being removed, unless released by the operator.

3.2.1.13.7. DRAWER DIVIDER STRIPS

Divider strips shall be provided around the four inside walls of each drawer. The divider strips shall be factory installed, and an integral part of the drawer. The divider strips shall provide for spacing of partitions and crosswise dividers in a range of 1/2 inch to one-inch intervals.

3.2.1.13.8. PARTITIONS

Partitions shall be defined as drawer dividers which run from front-to-back of each drawer. All partitions shall be made of steel. Partitions shall have slot spacings to match the drawer divider strips, for placement of crosswise dividers. Each partition shall be anchored, with a minimum of two bolts and nuts or two self-tapping metal screws, to the bottom of the drawer, to keep the partition flush with the bottom of the drawer. The partitions and crosswise dividers shall be the same height as the drawer body +/- 1/16 inch.

3.2.1.13.9. CROSSWISE DIVIDERS

Crosswise dividers shall be defined as dividers placed between adjacent partitions or between a drawer divider strip and a partition. All crosswise dividers shall be made of steel or aluminum. Crosswise dividers shall be easily removable and interchangeable with other crosswise dividers of the same size.

3.2.1.13.10. DRAWER COMPARTMENTALIZATION

Each drawer shall be compartmentalized such that the assigned number of compartments and partitions are provided as shown on

AF Drawing NWS912-03. All partitions and crosswise dividers shall be installed across the depth and width of each drawer.

The Contractor shall install all dividers

3.2.1.13.11. CARRIAGES AND BRACKETS

The cabinets shall include carriages (defined as rolling intermediate members which permit 100 percent extension of the drawer interior) and minimum 10-gauge steel brackets or side channels (defined as those members fixed to the shelving).

Carriages shall operate on precision ball and/or roller bearings. All carriages and brackets shall be the same for all drawers and completely interchangeable to preclude any possibility of an unsafe mix-up of lightweight brackets and carriages with heavily loaded drawers.

4. QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS

4.1. INSPECTIONS

The system shall be inspected to verify that it meets all the requirements of sections 1, 2, and 3 of this appendix and the

Cover PD. These inspections shall be completed as part of the system checkout test and again as a part of the quality conformance test.

4.2. TEST

The following test shall be performed on the system as part of the system checkout test and again as a part of the quality conformance test.
