About this file
This document contains responses to questions regarding a federal construction project for MRI site preparation at an Oklahoma Veterans Affairs medical center. Key details include: the scope of work involves demolishing and constructing a revised MRI suite and control room to comply with infection control requirements during a period of performance of 300 calendar days. The mechanical plans require clarification on connecting return air ducting and discharge of the quench vent. Safety and disruption concerns for the first floor during temporary ceiling work are also addressed. Responsibility for providing and installing the quench vent, koolant koolers panel, and matching medical gas outlets is clarified. Relocating an existing VAV box outside the MRI space is recommended for easier maintenance once installed.

Text version
68 . The layout doesn’t appear to fully comply with the VA’s MRI Safety Directive
1105.05 which requires ferromagnetic detection systems for new MRI installations.
Is a ferromagnetic system required? I thought we added some detection system late in the design process? We do have a ferrom system at the door, I will confirm this covers the question.
The ferromagnetic alarm system is included in the original documents.
There is already one there, but outdated. The Power outlet is in the drawings for the new system that will be installed at a later time, but for now, we will use the existing one.
69 . The layout doesn’t appear to comply with FGI minimum equipment clearances (though the drawings don’t clearly indicate what design code the project is adhering to).
Are there any size concerns for the current lay out vs. FGI minimum equipment clearances? Yes there are concerns that were discussed during design and an option to move the control room wall to make the room larger but these were decided against by the VA. The layout is provided by the VA working with their equipment vendor and provided to the Architects and Engineers. I concur, will review with John W.
The new equipment has been located in existing conditions. Contractor will need to specify his concerns about compliance issues.
70 The new mechanical plan (M001) doesn’t show how the RA grille is connected to the RA duct (or whether it would work with the new ducting). Is it possible to provide a detail for this? ? ?
If referring to the RA grille in room "100- MRI 1" on sheet M101, the existing plans show return duct coming off the grille, running approximately 6.5' to the south and then turning east to connect to return air main in the corridor.
71 The new mechanical plan does not indicate overpressure relief or exhaust from the MRI room. Are these required? Would require further research but my previous experience was that the over pressure relief was only required when the door swung in and now that we changed it to swing out it would not be required any more. Not sure about regular exhaust requirements.
Siemens has confirmed that overpressure relief is not required as long as the quench vent is installed per the manufacturer's specifications.
72 The new mechanical plan and quench pipe discharge details (M401) give no indication of what’s outside the room and whether the quench discharge is in an occupied / occupiable area. Are there any plans available for these spaces? Pretty sure this is on the roof, if that is not clear we should clarify. There is some clarity issued on the RFI#2 questions, but I will follow up on this too.
Quench vent to be routed up to mechanical mezzanine above MRI room and discharge (horizontally) through existing exhaust louver. This is similar to the quench vent installed on the adjacent MRI machine.
73 A100 shows the MRI room on the 2nd floor, and the drawings show no indication of safety / disruption concerns for the first floor.
Will temporary protection/demolition of existing ceilings be required? And if so, will this work be required to be performed in off hours.
Unclear what is being asked for. Yes there are ceilings that will need to be disturbed to install the hanging steel magnetic shield. Contractors are to include this work in their ICRA plan.
74 Is the Quench Vent provided by the MRI Supplier, installed by Mechanical Contractor?
Quench vent is to be provided and installed by the mechanical contractor.
75 is the “Koolant Koolers Manual Switch-over Panel” provided by the MRI Supplier, installed by the Mech/Plumbing Contractor?
Koolant koolers manual switch-over panel is to be provided and installed by the mechanical contractor.
76 The manufacturer and outlet type of the Med Gas Outlets are not provided in the drawings/specs. Please provide manufacturer and outlet type
Contractor is to match manufacturer and outlet type of units being removed. New outlets shall be non-ferrous constructions.
77 Currently, the drawings are showing a VAV box inside the MRI space. Our consultant recommended relocating this outside of the space as it will be very difficult to maintain/repair the VAV once the MRI is installed.
The existing VAV box inside the MRI space is accessible.
