SUBJECT: CAVE 169636 Carlsbad Cavern National Park, Replace Primary Electrical, Geophysical Survey Report - Final
Dear Ms. Aldridge
This report is provided to present the finding of the geophysical survey of the proposed alignment for replacement of the primary electrical system. All field surveys, investigations and analysis of the resulting data have been completed. The field work included:
establishing survey coordinate control of the information based on the available control monuments within the Park tied in with Global Positioning System (GPS), locating and determining the coordinates of the existing utilities within a 30 foot corridor of the proposed electrical alignment, geophysical survey of the proposed alignment utilizing Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ER) to detect potential voids or other anomalies, geophysical survey of the proposed alignment utilizing Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) to detect potential voids or other anomalies where ER was not possible due to interferences.
Preliminary results were presented to the NPS for concurrence on potential areas of concern.
Additional ER and GPR surveys were performed in the areas of concern to better inform decisions on the alignment of the primary electrical alignment.
The collected data was reduced and analyzed using various computer programs. The results of that analysis are presented as both a written summary and graphical images in this report. The graphical information has been normalized with topographical variations to improve the clarity of the information presented.
If you have any questions or comments after reading this report please let me know.

1 Introduction
1.1 Project Overview
HDR Engineering, Inc. (HDR) was contracted by the National Park Service to perform electrical resistivity (ER) tomography, ground penetrating radar (GPR), and utility locating surveys for the purpose of detecting possible voids existing within the subsurface along the route of the proposed electrical duct bank alignment and identifying conflicting utilities.
The survey area included the electrical substation access, portions of the Visitor’s Center parking lot and areas around park offices and residential buildings. Utilities within an approximately 30-foot wide corridor of the proposed electrical duct bank alignment were surveyed to aid in the ER and GPR interpretations as well as to provide utility information for the electrical system design and construction. This report contains an overview of field collection activities, data processing, and interpretation of the ER and GPR survey data and utility mapping results for the aforementioned project. The goal of this report is to provide a summary of the data collection and present the interpreted results of the geophysical surveys.
1.2 Purpose and Scope
The overall purpose of the geophysical investigation was split into two parts. The first was to detect the presence of shallow subsurface voids in the limestone within the path of the electric line. The focus of the void detection survey was the top 15 to 50 feet of the subsurface. The second was to identify and map the location of the existing utilities (electrical, telecom, fiber optic, water, and sewer) within the proposed electrical duct bank alignment.
2 Fieldwork Methodology For the identification and delineation of subsurface voids at the geophysical survey locations, the following technologies were used:
Ground Penetrating Radar;
Electrical Resistivity Tomography; and Global Positioning System.
For the identification and delineation of the existing utilities, the following technologies were used:
RD8000 Locator Ground Penetrating Radar
The paragraphs below provide a detailed description of each survey technology.

2.1 Electrical Resistivity Tomography
In sections of the proposed electric duct bank alignment that were not parallel to existing utilities, ER was used to detect subsurface voids. With this technique, the apparent electrical resistivity distribution of the subsurface is measured using multiple arrays of four electrodes. By injecting a direct current (DC) or very low frequency alternating current (AC) intensity (I) between a pair of electrodes and measuring the resulting potential difference (∆V) with a second pair of electrodes, it is possible to calculate the apparent resistivity (R) of the subsurface using a derivation of Ohm’s law (R=∆V/I). The approximate depth of this measurement is proportional to the unit spacing between the electrodes, and therefore, by increasing the separation of the electrodes, readings can be recorded from greater depths. Using large arrays of numerous electrodes, deployed in line and connected via multi-core cables, the measurement system then runs a series of commands that automatically selects various different combinations of electrodes, eventually creating a pseudo-section of apparent resistivity values for the subsurface beneath the electrode array.
It should be appreciated that the data recorded are ‘apparent’ resistivity values, and not the ‘true’ subsurface resistivity values. This is because the recorded values are a function of all parts of the subsurface that the current has traveled through between electrodes.
Conversion of the ‘apparent’ resistivity values to ‘true’ resistivity values is performed via an inversion process, which generates a model with a similar theoretical ‘apparent’ resistivity distribution to that of the field data. It must be noted that this process is non-unique; a given apparent resistivity data set might be accounted for by many different models. Therefore, inversion process is constrained using available intrusive site investigation data, so as to produce the most realistic geological model.
For this investigation, an AGI Supersting, 8-channel resistivity meter, with an array of 56 electrodes was used. Using unit electrode spacing of 10 feet and a combined dipole-dipole and inverse Schlumberger array, data was collected down to a minimum depth of 60 feet (this combined array takes advantage of the preferred lateral resolution provided by the dipole-dipole array and the vertical resolution provided by the inverse Schlumberger array).
It was assumed that the underlying bedrock has relatively uniform resistivity, with potential void features manifesting a regions of anomalous data (high for air-filled voids, low for sediment or water-filled karsts).
2.2 Ground Penetrating Radar
GPR was one of the geophysical methods used to help identify possible voids within the subsurface. This nondestructive method uses electromagnetic radiation in the microwave band (UHF/VHF radio frequencies). It detects reflected signals from subsurface interfaces and structures. GPR can be used in a variety of media, including rock, soil, ice, fresh water, pavements and structures. It can detect objects, changes in material, and conditions such as voids and cracks. GPR transmits high-frequency polarized radio waves into the ground. When the transmitted wave encounters a buried object, or a boundary with contrasting dielectric constants, the receiving antenna records a reflection and shows variations in the return signal. The GPR was utilized on this project along the proposed excavation route to identify anomalous areas. By the amplitude and general response of the instrument anomalies that could be voids were identified.
June 18, 2020 | 3
The depth range of the GPR is limited by the electrical conductivity of the ground and the transmitted center frequency of the antenna. As conductivity increases, the penetration depth decreases. Higher frequencies do not penetrate as far as lower frequencies, but give better resolution. Good penetration is also achieved in dry sandy soils, or massive and dry materials, such as granite, limestone, and concrete. The depth of penetration for a typical survey is usually between 10 and 15 feet. In moist and/or clay-laden soils and soils with high electrical conductivity, penetration is much less (sometimes only a few inches). The GPR data coverage is a single profile below each line with a very narrow width, considered to be just looks immediately below the survey path. Since in most areas two GPR profiles were collected and about two feet apart, the GPR coverage can be considered to be an approximately two-foot wide path where collected.
The physical GPR unit is a 3.0’x3.0’x1.5’ box that is mounted on a 4-wheel cart near the ground surface. The controller is a small handheld tablet that is used to control the collection and view the GPR data as it is collected. When operating the GPR, the unit must slide smoothly along the ground surface. The cart has the capability to float up and over small obstacles like rocks and tree roots, but larger obstacles may affect the data recorded or cause interference in the GPR signal.
2.3 RD8000 Locator
The RD8000 Locator (RD) has many different functions to identify and locate various utilities. The RD800 has a passive operation mode that detects the 60Hz frequency on active electric lines. Telecom, water, sewer and fiber optic lines required direct coupling to the utility or tracer wire to induce a known frequency with a low wattage transmitter and utilizing the RD800 Receiver to map the utility within the proposed electric corridor.
2.4 Global Positioning System
The global positioning system (GPS) used for this project was a Trimble Catalyst Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) mounted on s standard 6-foot survey pole. Positional accuracy is typically within 4 inches. The starting and ending stations (at a minimum) were recorded for both the GPR and ER survey line locations. For ER lines that crossed the more rugged terrain with changes in elevation were surveyed at more frequent stationing to help provide elevations along the line for data processing. The utilities traced and marked on the ground surface were also recorded during the GPS surveying. Several survey monuments were also surveyed and are included on site maps presented in Appendix A. and in the table below:

3 Summary of Field Activities and Site Conditions
3.1 Field Activities
A 2-person crew was mobilized to Carlsbad Caverns National Park and conducted field data collection from May 12th through 21st, 2020. The proposed electric duct bank alignment was walked by HDR and NPS personnel and flagging was placed at specific crossing points to minimize damage to historic features and mark selected alignment locations. As-built utility drawings were used to inform the GPR and ER survey layouts along the proposed electrical duct bank alignment. ER profile sections were collected in areas where no parallel utilities were expected within 50-feet of the ER profile. ER profiles were collected using a 5 to 10-foot electrode spacing in 28, 42 and 56 electrode profiles;
19 ER profiles were collected, totaling 5,300 linear feet. GPR transects were collected along the proposed electric line corridor in areas that contained utilities that would affect the ER data collection. GPR transects were collected using a GSSI 200-megahertz (MHz) hyper-staking antenna. The GPR antenna was deployed on small wheels that made it ideal for collection on hard surfaces. Due to the ease of GPR transect data collection in paved areas, GPR was also collected along ER profiles in the Visitor’s Center parking lot and along Reef Top Circle. GPS data was collected at each start and end points from the ER profiles and GPR transects. If the ER profile had significant elevation relief, then additional GPS positions were collected along the profile. Utilities mapped within the proposed electrical duct bank alignment were also recorded with the GPS. Appendix A contains sheets showing the route of the proposed electric duct bank alignment (approximate location, design in progress) and the geophysical ER profiles and GPR transect locations.
Also included on these figures are the interpreted primary voids. Primary voids are anomalies within the ER and GPR data that have both high amplitude responses and are of a larger size and within the top 10 to 15 feet from the ground surface. Other anomalies and potential deeper voids are included in the interpretations shown in Appendices B and C.

3.2 Site Conditions
Carlsbad Caverns National Park is located within the northern portion of the Chihuahuan Desert, and is bordered by the Guadalupe Mountains. The subsurface generally consists of limestone deposited around 265 million years ago as a reef near the shore of an inland sea. Within the last 10-15 million years, sulfuric acid has dissolved portions of the fossilized reef to create voids or in many cases large caves within the limestone.
The survey area was in the general vicinity of the park Visitor’s Center, offices, residential buildings, and maintenance shops. Areas that contained dense vegetation and terrain were surveyed primarily using the ER method; these areas are indicated on sheets in Appendix A. ER survey areas were focused on the following alignments: Electric Substation to park access road, Visitor’s Center to Reef Top Circle, southeast of the Superintendent Building, between Reef Top Circle and the housing area, and around the Six-Plex (Building 61).
4 Data Results
4.1 ER Results
ER profiles were modeled in the field right after collection and nightly. High amplitude resistivity anomalies were noted for discussion and flagged for additional data collection to define the extent of the shallow features.
Preliminary ER field data processing indicated shallow high resistivity features on lines ER-3, ER-10, ER-11, ER-13 and ER-14. Additional perpendicular or offset parallel ER profiles were added to further define the shallow anomalies. ER data was reprocessed back at the office and elevation and refined model parameters were applied as part of the final data processing. Appendix B contains the final processed ER data plots with interpreted features. Each profile collected is shown in combination with nearby or related lines on the same sheet and described in more detail in the following sections.
The ER-11 is a 270-foot profile that begins near the substation and travels uphill to the east ending past the dirt access road. A shallow high amplitude resistivity anomaly (>20,000 Ohm-m) occurs in the region of the access road from 190 feet to 240 feet from the beginning of the line. Profile ER-12 crosses perpendicular to ER-11 at station 210 feet
The ER-12 profile is 270 feet long and starts along the dirt access road from north to south and crosses the ER-11 profile at Station 165 feet. The high amplitude resistivity anomaly (>20,000 Ohm-m) in ER-11 is also defined in ER-12; this shallow feature could be associated with the exposed limestone bedrock along the access road or a shallow void area.
Working north along the dirt access road profile ER-3 starts at Carlsbad Caverns Hwy and overlaps profile ER-12 on the south end. ER-3 has a shallow high amplitude feature at 125 feet from the north end of the profile; ER-16 is a perpendicular profile added to further define the shallow anomaly. The anomalous feature in ER-3 and ER-16 show similar characteristics (>20,000 Ohm-m); the feature appears to shallow west of the dirt access road with a resistive feature at the ground surface.
6 | June 18, 2020
Three ER profiles were collected along the south parking stalls of the Visitor’s Center parking lot, working west to east, ER-5, ER-2 and ER-1. Profiles ER-5 and ER-1 have no high amplitude features. ER1 does have a large utility anomaly at 35 feet from the east end of the profile. Profile ER2 is the middle section of the parking lot and has an area that could contain shallow fill material on the east side of the profile. A moderate amplitude (15,000 Ohm-m) resistivity anomaly occurs at 240 feet from the east end of the ER-2 profile; perpendicular and parallel GPR profiles were collected to further define this anomaly.
Profile ER-10 is 410 feet long and crosses north of the Visitor’s Center though the stream bed and ends north of Reef Top Circle. The south end of the line has a shallow bowl feature from 80 feet to 150 feet. The northern 2/3rds of the line contains no high amplitude features. Offset parallel lines ER-18 (10 feet) and ER-19 (20 feet) were added to the west to further define the shallow feature in ER-10. Both ER-18 and ER-19 show a similar anomalous feature (>20,000 ohm-m) that indicates a possible void area.
ER Profiles ER-6, ER-7, and ER-9 were collected along Reef Top Circle working west to east, each profile overlaping the previous profile approximately 60 feet. ER-6 has two high amplitude anomalies, at 30 feet to 55 feet, and 70 feet to 90 feet. A disturbed area from 170 feet to 205 feet is likely due to the subsurface utilities. No crossings were added in this area due to terrain and parallel utilities. Profile ER-7 has no shallow high amplitude anomalies. Profile ER-9 was collected adjacent to the Bat Walk Trail just south of the superintendent’s offices. Shallow features in ER-9 could be the storm sewer from 50 feet to 60 feet. A high amplitude feature from 85 feet to 125 feet could be a subsurface void;
no crossing profiles were added in this area due to terrain and proximity to nearby utilities.
Profile ER-8 was a short resistivity line (216 feet) from the superintendent’s offices across the Bat Walk Trail and into the old parking lot. A spatially small and elevated resistivity feature at 50 feet from the north end of the profile is not likely a void. The 10,000 Ohm-m feature from 90 feet to 113 feet is likely the walkway and electric line associated with the path lights. The shallow high amplitude features occurs from 118 feet to 130 feet could be a void; however, this area is in the old parking lot and likely out of the proposed electric duct bank alignment.
ER-14 is another 410-foot long profile from Reef Top Circle north to the Six-Plex housing area. Shallow anomalies that could possibly be voids were investigated with the perpendicular crossing profile ER-20. Both ER-14 and ER-20 profiles have similar features, and although not high in amplitude, they could be associated with voids. ER-20 did cross the current water line as indicated at 237 feet from the west end of the profile.
ER profiles ER-13, ER-15 and ER-17 cover the north and east side of the Six-Plex building.
Small shallow anomalies in ER-13 could be voids. Due to limited space to add a crossing east/west profile, a 10-foot parallel offset profile (ER-17) was added east of ER13. Three features were identified in ER-13 at 90 feet, 110 feet, and 145 feet to 185 feet. Two of the three features show up in the ER-17 profile, with the shallow feature furthest south only being 15-foot long instead of 40-foot long. Profiles ER-13 and ER-17 were collected very close to a NW-SE trending electric utility and that repeatable anomaly can been seen in the southern end of both profiles. ER profile ER-15 was collected east to west and no shallow high amplitude features are in the data.

4.2 GPR Results
GPR transects were analyzed near real-time while in the field, and additional parallel or crossing transects were added to help define subsurface features and/or utilities.
Additional processing and analysis was performed after returning from the field, including normalizing color scales and gain settings. Anomalies in the GPR data were interpreted based on the relative changes in amplitude of the signal and patterns of the reflections.
Two categories were used for interpreting anomalous areas: probable void or weak zones in the rock (solid yellow circled areas in the data) and possible weak zones or fill areas that may have some void space (dashed yellow circled areas). Appendix C contains GPR data plots with interpreted features. Each GPR line collected is shown in combination with nearby or related lines on the same sheet. A summary of notable features is described in the following sections, working from south to north across the site.
GPR profiles ID’s 14-19 are over the area where the proposed duct bank crosses the main park entrance road (Carlsbad Caverns Highway). Lines were collected in both parallel and perpendicular orientation to the proposed electrical duct bank alignment. No probable or strong void-like features were interpreted in this area.
GPR profiles ID’s 20-22 and 50-60 are within the Visitor’s Center parking lot. Profiles 20- 22 are parallel and coincide with ER lines 5, 2 and 1 (west to east). Similar to the ER interpretations, these lines do have some anomalies; however, the character of the reflections is more of what is expected over areas of fill that may include large boulders and/or small void spaces. No large probable interpreted voids were found with the GPR.
Additional GPR lines near an anomaly interpreted along ER-2 were collected as GPR ID’s 52-60. Again, most of the GPR anomalies were not interpreted as probable voids, except one small shallow area between 26 to 38 feet from the south end of profile 56. Adjacent
8 | June 18, 2020 lines near this anomaly did not exhibit a similar feature, therefore we estimate it is minor and not widespread. GPR profiles 50 and 51 were collected over the proposed duct bank alignment in a curved area that was outside the straight line path of ER-5. Both of these profiles have interpreted probable voids within the top 15 feet of the surface. For profile 50 from the west interpreted voids include; 0 to 14, 20 to 46, 74 to 85, 105 to 128 and 202 to 214 feet. For profile 51 from the west interpreted voids include; 55 to 85, 96 to 114 and 192 to 210 feet. Again, these areas in the GPR show reflections that are also consistent with areas of fill and these possible voids may just be areas of less compacted fill or void space between larger boulders.
GPR profiles ID’s 2-6, 23 and 24 were collected within the driving lanes on the west side of the Visitor’s Center. One larger area of possible fill was identified to be consistent across most of the GPR profiles. Although this area may contain areas of smaller voids, the GPR signature was consistent to what is expected over fill containing larger boulders or inconsistent zones of rock.
GPR profiles ID’s 7-13, 25 and 26 were collected within the driving lane on the north side of the Visitor’s Center. Several shallow utilities were expected/traced in this area (discussed further in the utility survey results section) and some were imaged by the GPR and identified with black arrows added to the interpreted profiles presented in Appendix C. This area also had a consistent zone of possible fill similar to the west side of the building but also within this area was a zone of stronger amplitude GPR signals that are consistent with what is expected over voids. This zone was found to be approximately 55 to 125 feet from the west along GPR profiles 7-9, also seen on crossing lines GPR 10-13 approximately 0 to 20 feet from the south of these profiles. Other anomalies near this area within the GPR lines are consistent with possible fill and may be related to fill but they exhibit stronger reflections in the data and should be considered as probable voids.
GPR profiles ID’s 47-49 were lines collected parallel and adjacent to ER lines 6, 7 and 9 also along Reef Top Circle. GPR line 47 (along ER-6) interpreted void-like features at 86 to 104 feet and 232 to 246 feet from the west. GPR line 48 (along ER-7) also had void-like features at 52 to 72 feet and 164 to 210 feet from the west end of the line. Within this line on the GPR profile a sloping higher amplitude structure is visible that may indicate a deeper rock surface and the anomaly near 52 to 72 feet could be related to changes in fill.
For GPR line 49 (along ER-9) an anomalous area at 0 to 42 feet from the west was interpreted that may be related to a shallow void. These areas were not identified during the data review in the field, therefore further exploratory GPR lines or crossing lines were not collected.
GPR profiles ID’s 27-35 were collected along and near Permian Drive and the housing area of the park. GPR profile ID 32 was collected along Permian Drive within the pavement of the road and an interpreted probable void area at 80 to 99 feet from the west was observed but was not detected on adjacent GPR lines. On GPR profile ID 34 a void-like anomaly was observed between 537 to 542 feet from west and a similar anomaly was observed on GPR profile ID 35 at 532 to 541 feet from the west. GPR profile ID 29 has a strong high amplitude area between 30 to 37 feet from the south near a utility crossing.
This area could be related to the utility but does have a void-like appearance. GPR profile ID 27 had a high amplitude reflective area near the surface from about 2 to 22 feet from the south that may be related to fill; a similar but lower amplitude anomaly was observed
June 18, 2020 | 9 in adjacent GPR line ID 28 near this area. No other probable void features were interpreted on the remaining GPR lines within this area.
GPR profiles ID’s 42-46 were collected along the access road near the maintenance building. No probable voids or anomalous area with void-like signature in the GPR data were interpreted within this area.
GPR profiles ID’s 36-41 were collected near the west side of the Six-Plex building. This area is unpaved but some smoother areas to make GPR transects were chosen. This area appears in the GPR data to have zones of possible fill; however, no probable voids were interpreted.
Table 3 (below) provides geographic coordinates for the potential voids interpreted within the GPR data. Each coordinate represents the New Mexico State Plane, NAD27 coordinate for the center of each area of interest from the GPR profiles.

4.3 Utility Survey Results
In conjunction with the ER and GPR void investigations, utility tracing and mapping along the proposed duct bank alignment were also performed. Expected utilities shown on previous survey maps provided by the park were used to help search for known water, gas, electric, telecom, and sewer lines within the proposed alignment. Conductive lines were of interest for the ER survey to avoid interference during data collection. Secondly, potential utility crossings that conflict with the proposed alignment are of interest for the
10 | June 18, 2020 duct bank design. Expanding upon the expected or known utilities, crews further searched for unknown or undocumented utilities by connecting and tracing from surface utility related features (such as hydrants and vaults), when near the alignment, to attempt to detect lines heading into the proposed duct bank route. Appendix D presents a set of map sheets along the alignment showing traced and GPS-surveyed utilities. Some area utilities are shown extending further away from the alignment that were traced from further connection points. However, this should not imply that all utilities were located within these extended areas. Also, nonconductive utilities that were not detected or located with the GPR may not have been mapped. Sewers (both sanitary/wastewater and storm water) were not traced and lines shown are based on expected line connection from site observations and historic drawing information.

The results, conclusions, and recommendations contained in this report are directed at, and intended to be utilized within, the scope of work contained in the agreement executed by HDR and client. This report is not intended to be used for any other purposes. HDR makes no claim or representation concerning any activity or condition falling outside the specified purposes to which this report is directed, said purposes being specifically limited to the scope of work as defined in said agreement. Inquiries as to said scope of work or concerning any activity or condition not specifically contained therein should be directed to HDR for a determination and, if necessary, further investigation.
Geophysical exploration methods are non-intrusive, indirect, and potentially influenced by a variety of natural or man-made conditions. The potential for detecting the presence or absence of underground objects or voids is based on the quality of the recorded data as limited by site conditions, and on the interpretation of the data received; hence, there will always be the potential of not observing a subsurface object or void or interpreting the presence of a subsurface object or void where one does not exist.
