SECTION 101400 - SIGNAGE
This Section uses the term "Architect." Change this term to match that used to identify the design professional as defined in the General and Supplementary Conditions.
Verify that Section titles referenced in this Section are correct for this Project's Specifications; Section titles may have changed.
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS
A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.
1.2 SUMMARY
A. This Section includes the following:
Adjust list below to suit Project.
1. Panel signs.
B. Related Sections include the following:
List below only products and construction that the reader might expect to find in this Section but are specified elsewhere.
1. Division 01 Section "Temporary Facilities and Controls" for temporary Project identification signs and for temporary information and directional signs.
2. Division 23 Identification for HVAC Piping and Equipment" for labels, tags, and nameplates for HVAC systems and equipment.
3. Division 26 Sections for electrical service and connections for illuminated signs.
4. Division 26 Section "Identification for Electrical Systems" for labels, tags, and nameplates for electrical equipment.
5. Division 26 Section "Interior Lighting" for illuminated Exit signs.
1.3 ACTION SUBMITTALS
A. Product Data: For each type of product indicated.
Retain first paragraph and subparagraphs below. Add requirements for different sign types.
B. Shop Drawings: Show fabrication and installation details for signs.
1. Show sign mounting heights, locations of supplementary supports to be provided by others, and accessories.
2. Provide message list, typestyles, graphic elements, including tactile characters and Braille, and layout for each sign.
Retain subparagraph below if equipment includes wiring.
C. Samples for Initial Selection: Manufacturer's color charts consisting of actual units or sections of units showing the full range of colors available for the following:
Delete materials in list below if not required.
Delete paragraph and subparagraphs above if colors and other characteristics are preselected and specified or scheduled. Retain first paragraph and subparagraphs below with or without above.
D. Samples for Verification: For each of the following products and for the full range of color, texture, and sign material indicated, of sizes indicated:

E. Sign Schedule: Use same designations indicated on Drawings.
1.4 INFORMATIONAL SUBMITTALS
Coordinate first paragraph below with qualification requirements in Division 01 Section "Quality Requirements" and as supplemented in "Quality Assurance" Article.
A. Warranty: Special warranty specified in this Section.
1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE
Select one of two options in first paragraph below or insert requirements.
A. Fabricator Qualifications: Shop that employs skilled workers who custom-fabricate products similar to those required for this Project and whose products have a record of successful in-service performance.
B. Source Limitations for Signs: Obtain each sign type indicated from one source from a single manufacturer.
Signage required to be accessible to people with disabilities must comply with requirements in ADA-ABA Accessibility Guidelines and with requirements of authorities having jurisdiction, whichever are more stringent. Verify local requirements and insert additional requirements below.
Delete paragraph below if no illuminated signs.
1.6 PROJECT CONDITIONS
Retain first paragraph below for signs installed in exterior locations.
A. Weather Limitations: Proceed with installation only when existing and forecasted weather conditions permit installation of signs in exterior locations to be performed according to manufacturers' written instructions and warranty requirements.
B. Field Measurements: Verify recess openings by field measurements before fabrication and indicate measurements on Shop Drawings.
1.7 COORDINATION
Delete this Article if no signs are anchored to permanent construction that require installation of anchorage devices by other installers.
A. Coordinate placement of anchorage devices with templates for installing signs.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
Retain first paragraph below if extruded aluminum is used for panel frames and internal stiffeners, caps, or other elements.
Retain paragraph and subparagraphs below for signs subject to high wind loads or if internal support is required for large signs. Delete materials not required.
Retain first paragraph below if fiberglass is used as sign facing material.
2.1 PANEL SIGNS
Delete this Article if no panel signs.
See Editing Instruction No. 1 in the Evaluations for cautions about naming manufacturers and products. Retain one of first three paragraphs and list of manufacturers below. See Division 01 Section "Product Requirements."
A. Available Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, manufacturers offering products that may be incorporated into the Work include, but are not limited to, the following:
Manufacturers listed below use one or more of graphic processes specified. Revise list to suit Project.
1. Best Sign Systems Inc.
2. Gemini Incorporated.
3. Mohawk Sign Systems; “Series 100”.
4. Nelson-Harkins Industries.
5. Supersine Company (The)
6. Or approved equal.
B. Interior Panel Signs: Provide smooth sign panel surfaces constructed to remain flat under installed conditions within a tolerance of plus or minus 1/16 inch (1.5 mm) measured diagonally from corner to corner, complying with the following requirements:
Revise subparagraphs and associated subparagraphs below to suit Project.
Select materials from first 10 subparagraphs below.
1. Aluminum Sheet: 0.125 inch thick.
2. Edge Condition: Square cut.
3. Corner Condition: Square.
4. Mounting: Unframed.
a. Wall mounted with mechanical fasteners.
5. Tactile Characters: Characters and Grade 2 Braille raised 1/32 inch (0.8 mm) above surface with contrasting colors.
Revise paragraph below if bracket color is different from sign's background color.
Retain paragraph and subparagraphs below for framed interior and exterior panel signs.
Insert requirements in paragraph below for fixed and changeable message units if not included on Drawings. Changeable messages are usually provided by Owner. Sign fabricator can provide messages but, for bidding purposes, responsibility for messages should be included in the Specifications.
ADA-ABA Accessibility Guidelines and ICC/ANSI A117.1 require tactile and Braille characters to be raised a minimum of 1/32 inch (0.8 mm) from face of sign.
Process in paragraph and subparagraphs below does not comply with tactile requirements in ADA-ABA Accessibility Guidelines and ICC/ANSI A117.1. Engraved copy below does not leave raised text.
C. Engraved Copy: Machine engrave letters, numbers, symbols, and other graphic devices into panel sign on face indicated to produce precisely formed copy, incised to uniform depth.
Select one of four subparagraphs below.
1. Engraved Metal: Fill engraved copy with enamel.
Retain paragraph below if copy is applied to the back of clear face sheet.
Delete paragraph and subparagraphs below if schedule is shown on Drawings. Revise schedule to suit Project.
D. Panel Sign Schedule:
Copy subparagraph and associated subparagraphs below for each sign type and insert applicable requirements.
1. Sign Type:
a. Sign Size: As indicated on drawings.
b. Background Finish/Color: As selected by the Contracting Officer from the manufacturer’s full range of colors.
c. Character Size: 1” unless noted otherwise.
d. Character Finish/Color: As selected by the Contracting Officer from the manufacturer’s full range of colors.
e. Text/Message: As indicated on drawings.
f. Typography: Helvetica medium.
g. Location: As indicated.
2.2 FABRICATION
A. General: Provide manufacturer's standard signs of configurations indicated.
Revise subparagraphs below to suit Project.
2.3 FINISHES, GENERAL
A. Comply with NAAMM's "Metal Finishes Manual for Architectural and Metal Products" for recommendations for applying and designating finishes.
B. Protect mechanical finishes on exposed surfaces from damage by applying a strippable, temporary protective covering before shipping.
C. Appearance of Finished Work: Variations in appearance of abutting or adjacent pieces are acceptable if they are within one-half of the range of approved Samples. Noticeable variations in the same piece are not acceptable. Variations in appearance of other components are acceptable if they are within the range of approved Samples and are assembled or installed to minimize contrast.
2.4 ALUMINUM FINISHES
Retain finishes in this Article to suit Project.
Generally retain only one of first two paragraphs below. If retaining both, indicate location of each on Drawings or by inserts. Revise mechanical finish if custom finish is required and availability is verified.
Retain one mechanical finish in paragraph below.
A. Baked-Enamel Finish: AA-C12C42R1x (Chemical Finish: cleaned with inhibited chemicals; Chemical Finish: acid-chromate-fluoride-phosphate conversion coating; Organic Coating: as specified below). Apply baked enamel complying with paint manufacturer's written instructions for cleaning, conversion coating, and painting.
Subparagraph below references AAMA standard for pigmented organic coating on extrusions and panels.
1. Organic Coating: Thermosetting, modified-acrylic enamel primer/topcoat system complying with AAMA 2603 except with a minimum dry film thickness of 1.5 mils (0.04 mm), medium gloss.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATION
A. Examine substrates, areas, and conditions, with Installer present, for compliance with requirements for installation tolerances and other conditions affecting performance of work.
B. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.
3.2 INSTALLATION
A. Locate signs and accessories where indicated, using mounting methods of types described and complying with manufacturer's written instructions.
1. Install signs level, plumb, and at heights indicated, with sign surfaces free of distortion and other defects in appearance.
Revise subparagraph below to suit Project. Delete if all locations are scheduled or indicated on Drawings.
Delete paragraph and subparagraphs below if wall-mounted signs are not included. If only one mounting method is required, combine paragraph with applicable subparagraph.
B. Wall-Mounted Signs: Comply with sign manufacturer's written instructions except where more stringent requirements apply.
Select appropriate mounting methods from subparagraphs below.
Delete subparagraph below if mechanical fasteners are not appropriate. Mechanical fasteners may be more vandal resistant than some other methods specified above.
1. Mechanical Fasteners: Use nonremovable mechanical fasteners placed through predrilled holes. Attach signs with fasteners and anchors suitable for secure attachment to substrate as recommended in writing by sign manufacturer.
Delete subparagraph below if no signs mounted on glass.
Delete paragraph below if no bracket-mounted signs. Revise if custom-fabricated fittings are required and detailed. Insert other mounting method to suit Project.
Delete paragraph and subparagraphs below if no dimensional characters. Revise if standard installation methods are not acceptable.
3.3 CLEANING AND PROTECTION
A. After installation, clean soiled sign surfaces according to manufacturer's written instructions. Protect signs from damage until acceptance by Contracting Officer.
