SECTION 232100 – GLYCOL MAKEUP SYSTEM
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS
A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.
1.2 SUMMARY
A. This Section includes the following:
1. Packaged Glycol Makeup System.
B. Related Sections:
1. Division 23 Section "Vibration and Seismic Control for HVAC Piping and Equipment” for anchoring requirements.
C. All system mounted control components shall be provided and installed by the Manufacturer at the factory. All remote instrumentation shall be provided and installed by the controls contractor in the field.
1.3 DEFINITIONS
A. EMS: Building Management System.
1.4 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
A. Propylene Glycol: All components and parts that make up the system shall be suitable for operating with 30-percent propylene glycol.
1.5 SUBMITTALS
A. Product Data: Include certified performance curves and rated capacities, operating characteristics, furnished specialties, and accessories for each type of product indicated. Indicate pump's operating point on curves.
B. Shop Drawings: Show pump layout and connections. Include setting drawings with templates for installing foundation and anchor bolts and other anchorages.
1. Wiring Diagrams: Power, signal, and control wiring.

C. Operation and Maintenance Data: For pumps to include in emergency, operation, and maintenance manuals.
D. Field installed equipment list.
1.6 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Product Options: Drawings indicate size, profiles, and dimensional requirements of the Glycol Makeup System and are based on the specific system indicated. Refer to Division 01 Section "Product Requirements."
B. Electrical Components, Devices, and Accessories: Listed and labeled as defined in NFPA 70, Article 100, by a testing agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction, and marked for intended use.
C. UL Compliance: Comply with UL 778 for motor-operated water pumps.
1.7 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
A. System shall be delivered fully assembled by the Manufacturer. Unit shall ship in one piece.
B. Deliver products with factory installed shipping skids and lifting lugs. During shipment, provide protective covering over vulnerable components. Fit nozzles and open ends with plastic enclosures. Protect the unit and its accessories from the weather and dirt exposure during shipment in totally enclosed shrink wrap.
C. Manufacturer's Preparation for Shipping: Clean flanges and exposed machined metal surfaces and treat with anticorrosion compound after assembly and testing. Protect flanges, pipe openings, and nozzles with wooden flange covers or with screwed-in plugs.
D. Installing Contractor shall retain protective covers for flanges and protective coatings during storage.
E. Manufacturer and Installing Contractor shall protect bearings and couplings against damage from sand, grit, and other foreign matter.
F. Unit shall be stored in a dry location and handled by the Installing Contractor per Manufacturer’s instructions.

1.8 COORDINATION
A. Installing Contractor shall coordinate sizes, locations and anchoring attachments with actual equipment provided.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1 GENERAL
A. Provide system as a complete package system with only external connection of electrical power, piping and controls required.
2.2 GLYCOL MAKE-UP UNIT
A. Manufacturers:
1. Bell and Gossett/ITT
2. PACO
3. Wessels Company
B. Manufacturer shall furnish and Installing Contractor shall install a packaged, automatic glycol solution make-up unit.
C. Storage tank: Polyethylene tank with visible solution level scale in gallons with removable lid. Reinforced threaded pipe connections shall be provided for all connections.
D. Pumps: Bronze fitted, self-priming, high head type suitable for pumping a 30-percent propylene glycol solution in intermittent service. The pump shall be provided with a mechanical shaft seal and be flange connected to a 1750 rpm NEMA type C motor.
Unit shall provide 6 gpm and be capable of maintaining a fill pressure of 25 psig (adjustable).
E. Piping train shall include strainers, unit isolation valves, pump isolation valves, pump check and balance valves, discharge pressure gage, pressure control and necessary interconnecting piping.
F. Back pressure regulating valve: Spring loaded, diaphragm actuated type with bronze or steel body, stainless steel trim with capacity to relieve 100 percent of pump flow with an allowable rise in the regulated pressure of 10 psig above the set point. Set point shall be 15 psig above system PRV setting. Discharge shall be routed to the tank.
G. Discharge piping: Provide a 1/2” NPS discharge connection with an automatic isolation pressure switch upstream of the unit isolation valve.

H. See sequence of operation for points list.
I. Alarms: Unit shall include hard wired low and high level cutouts and pump failure, with red indicator lights and local audible alarm on the gage stand.
2.3 POWER AND CONTROLS
A. Power:
1. Manufacturer shall provide and install at the factory all power components, including but not limited to, conduits, electrical conductors, junction boxes, switches, and disconnects. Electrical components, devices, and materials shall be sized in accordance with NEC requirements for 40 deg C operating conditions.
2. Power shall be provided via integrated power connections. Division 26 shall provide individual electrical connections in the field.
a. Glycol Make-Up Package: Unit shall be provided with a single point electrical connection.
B. Controls:
1. The Manufacturer shall provide and install at the factory, all unit mounted control components, including but not limited to, pressure sensors and transducers, power monitoring devices, terminal blocks and control transformers. All control wiring and conduit shall be provided and installed by the Manufacturer at the factory.
2.4 IDENTIFICATION
A. All pipe connections shall be clearly labeled for field connection.
B. Provide identification for glycol tank showing name of the contents.
2.5 CAPACITIES AND CHARACTERISTICS
A. Refer to the drawings and schedules for equipment capacities and characteristics.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

A. Installing Contractor shall examine units before installation and shall examine roughing-in for hydronic piping systems and electrical services to verify actual locations of connections before installation.
B. Units that are damaged shall be rejected.
C. Installing Contractor shall proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.
D. All items shipped loose with the units shall be field installed by the Installing Contractor.
Manufacturer shall provide list of items shipped loose.
3.2 INSTALLATION
A. General: This work applies to both the Manufacturer and the Installing Contractor.
1. Install valves with unions or flanges at each piece of equipment arranged to allow service, maintenance, and equipment removal without system shutdown.
2. Independently support pumps and piping so weight of piping is not supported by pumps and weight of pumps is not supported by piping.
3. Locate valves for easy access and provide separate support where necessary.
4. Install valves in horizontal piping with stem at or above center of pipe.
5. Install valves in position to allow full stem movement.
6. Install check valves for proper direction of flow in horizontal position with hinge pin level.
7. All flanged valves shall be located such that access for maintenance and repair is possible.
8. Install drains, consisting of a tee fitting, NPS 3/4 ball valve, and short NPS 3/4 threaded nipple with cap, at low points in piping system mains and elsewhere as required for system drainage.
9. Soldered Joints: Apply ASTM B 813, water-flushable flux, unless otherwise indicated, to tube end. Construct joints according to ASTM B 828 or CDA's "Copper Tube Handbook," using lead-free solder alloy complying with
ASTM B 32.
10. Welded Joints: Construct joints according to AWS D10.12/D10.12M, using qualified processes and welding operators according to Part 1 "Quality Assurance" Article.

11. Flanged Joints: Select appropriate gasket material, size, type, and thickness for service application. Install gasket concentrically positioned. Use suitable lubricants on bolt threads.
12. Brazed Joints: Construct joints according to AWS's "Brazing Handbook," "Pipe and Tube" Chapter, using copper-phosphorus brazing filler metal complying with
AWS A5.8.
13. Arrange installation of units to provide access space for service and maintenance.
14. Drain piping from pressure relief valves in the glycol systems shall be piped to the Glycol Make-up Unit.
15. Concrete Bases: Install concrete bases per equipment pad details on the Structural drawings on GMP-004 only. No base required on the mezzanines.
16. Installing Contractor shall furnish application specific pressure reducing valve between glycol make-up unit and connection to the system piping.
3.3 DEMONSTRATION AND TRAINING
A. Engage a factory-authorized service representative to train Owner's maintenance personnel to adjust, operate, and maintain Glycol Makeup System.
