PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.1 MATERIALS

The sign shall be fiberglass embedded graphic panels mounted in all steel, powder coated frame. The sign shall have a nominal size of 30" high by 40" long.

A disk will be provided to the Contractor containing the graphics and photographic information. The digitized information contained on the disk is for use only on the signs for this project. Any unauthorized use is prohibited.

2.1.1 Fiberglass Panels

The panels shall consist of screen printing the specified graphics and embedding the printed sheets into a resin/fiberglass composition panel.

Where multiple colors are used, panels may be full color ink-jet digital image for fiberglass embedment.

All printing must be of the highest quality. Where multiple colors are needed, they shall be in tight register. The images must be consistent in color, opacity and have sharp, clean edges. For those signs requiring a colored background, the colors must be printed, not sprayed, roller coated or applied in some other fashion.

The inks used must, in addition, be able to withstand the embedment process and also be able to provide ten years of color integrity in outdoor exposure.

Paper prints need to be a minimum of two inches (2") larger on all side in order to provide a bleed trim after embedment.

The embedment process requires that the printed paper shall be totally embedded in resin along with equal fiberglass loading front and back. This composite shall then be cured under pressure and temperature to yield an intricate panel with flat smooth surfaces on both sides. The composition shall consist of all white glass and clear resin so that when combined and cured the index of refraction shall assure total clarity of the embedded printed graphics.

The cured panels shall be trimmed to the specified final sizes.

The panels must be resistant to scratching, ink, paint, steam, acids and aromatics. All ink or paint marking shall be readily removable with soap and water or solvents without harm. The panels shall also be resistant to burning by cigarettes.

2.1.2 Steel Frame/Structures

The Steel Frame/Structure shall be standard weight steel and shall conform to ASTM serial Designation F-1083 Schedule 60, seamless ASTM Type S, Grade B.

Steel frame/structures shall be powder coated and hot dip galvanized inside and outside in accordance with ASTM Serial Designation F-1083.

The fiberglass embedded panel will be installed in the frames as shown in the Shop Drawings to allow removal in the future. The completed assemblies shall be crafted in materials and containers to insure they will not be damaged during normal shipping conditions.

2.1.3 Powder Coating for Steel

Sign frame shall be powder coated with either polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or TGIC-Polyester.

Galvanizing of all components shall provide an acceptable substrate for applied powder coatings. No lacquer, urethane or other coatings which would prevent proper adhesion of powder coating shall be applied to the framework.

The powder coating shall be applied to the galvanized sign frame in such a manner that the coating will not peel off. Insure surfaces to be coated are clean and dry and free of grease, dust, rust, etc. All coated parts shall first receive phosphating and chromatizing treatments to improve the adhesion of the surface coating.

Color for the steel is RAL 901 Graphite Black (or equivalent), submit sample for approval.

The sign frame shall be coated with one of the two following types of powder coating:

1. TYPE A - Polyvinyl Chloride Powder Coating: PVC Powder coating shall be applied to the galvanized frame by the fluid bed method to a preheated base which has been cleaned and primed prior to submersion in vinyl, resulting in a firm bond between the PVC and the metal. PVC shall be applied to a film thickness of 10 to 15 mils, without voids, tears or cuts that reveal the substrate and shall thoroughly adhere to the metal without peeling when scratched with a pick device or knife blade point.

Field Test For PVC Powder Coating: As per ASTM F668, three sample sections of the PVC powder coated posts shall be tested for bonding of the powder coat to the metal. Each test will consist of making two cuts parallel to the axis of the pipe, through the coating, approximately 1/16 inch (1.6 mm) apart, at least 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) long. With a knife peel back a section of the coating between 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) and 1/4 inch (6.4 mm) long to produce a tab. Attempt to remove the 1/16 inch strip of coating by pulling the tab. The posts shall be deemed acceptable if the coating breaks rather than separates from the metal on all three samples.

2. TYPE B - TGIC-Polyester Powder Coating: TGIC-Polyester Powder shall be applied to the galvanized frame in such a manner that the coating will not peel off. The TGIC-Polyester shall be applied at a film thickness of 3 to 6 mils by electrostatic spray process and bake finished per manufacturer's directions. The TGIC-Polyester shall be applied without voids, tears or cuts that reveal the substrate and shall thoroughly adhere to the metal

SECTION 10 14 23 Page 3 without peeling when scratched with a pick device or knife blade point.

Laboratory Test For TGIC-Polyester Powder Coat: At the discretion of the COR, a sample of the TGIC-Polyester powder coated frame shall be laboratory tested for bonding of the powder coating to the metal. Test shall be the Cross Hatch test per ASTM D3359, method B. Failure to satisfactorily pass this test shall be a basis for rejection.

2.1.4 Touch-Up & Repair

For minor damage caused by installation, transportation, field welding and cutting of metal powder coated surfaces:

WELDING: All welds shall be ground smooth. All sharp and ragged edges have to be eased smooth.

FRAMEWORK: The framework shall be standard weight steel galvanized inside and outside and removable "L" or "F" shaped galvanized molding (or approved equal).

HARDWARE: Hardware shall be hot-dipped galvanized lag and machine bolts, vandal-proof, and painted to match the frame. All mounting hardware shall be coordinated with the sign manufacturer.

EXTRA MATERIALS: The manufacturer shall supply four (4) extra copies of the graphic for future fiberglass embedment and one extra fiberglass embedded graphic to be delivered to the COR.

2.1.5 Footings

Footings shall be of concrete with a minimum of 3000 psi at 28 days.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 INSTALLATION

The location of the Interpretive Sign shall be along the new paved bike path by the northeast corner of the project Option #4 Marsh Overlook. The final location shall be approved by the COR in the field. The sign shall be installed in a true vertical position and the sign posts shall be set in concrete. Concrete shall be thoroughly consolidated around each post and shall be free of voids.

The Interpretive Sign shall be installed as per the manufacturer's specifications, and shall resemble the attached drawings or be an approved equal.
