Handles shall be provided for 4-person lifting. One hand lifting by each person is acceptable. If the handles are sized properly and placed for a balanced load, it is acceptable for a single handle to accommodate two lifters. Side handles that are added to the chest, not molded as part of the chest, shall be affixed using fasteners that cannot be readily removed, i.e. rivets or screws that cannot be removed with a screw driver. Non-fixed handles (e.g., hinged or fold-out) shall have a stop position for holding the handle perpendicular to the surface on which it is mounted and shall be capable of being placed into carrying position by one hand wearing heavy insulated work gloves. For information on sizing these handles, see 3.5.5.5. | X | |||||||||
| 3.5.4.2 | Wheels | The wheels shall provide the ability to roll the fully loaded chest around on paved, hard floor, grass and gravel surfaces. The wheels shall be attached to and be integrated into the design of the chest. The presence of the wheels shall not interfere with the stacking ability. | X | X | ||||||||
| 3.5.4.2.4 | Wheel replacement | All of the wheels shall be able to be replaced in no longer than 10 minutes using only tools from the GMTK. No access to the interior of the chest shall be required for wheel replacement. The tool chest shall remain weather-tight after the wheels are replaced. No sealant shall be required to maintain weather-tightness for wheel replacement. | X | |||||||||
| 3.5.4.3.1 | Telescoping handle length | The distance from the floor to the bottom of the hand grip of the extended handle shall allow full use by the target population, all individuals from the 5% female to the 95% male. To allow full use by this population, this distance shall be no less than 41 inches. See Figure 3 for further clarity on the required 41 inch dimension. | X | X | ||||||||
| 3.5.5.1 | Hardware | In order to meet corrosion prevention and maintenance requirements, all hardware used in the construction of the tool chest shall be either 316 stainless steel or electropolished 304 stainless steel. This includes all screws, pins, bolts, rivets, and any latching, locking, and sealing hardware including hinges. A certificate of conformance shall be sufficient demonstration that the tool chest complies with this requirement. | X | X | ||||||||
| 3.5.5.2 | Stacking | The chest shall be designed to allow stacking, avoiding any placement of handles, clasps, or other features in a position that interferes with stacking of identical or similar items. When four fully loaded chests are stacked, a 20 pound tipping force applied to the top of the top chest in any direction shall not cause the chests to tip or fall. | X | |||||||||
| 3.5.5.5 | Human Engineering | The tool storage chest, including the handle and clasps, shall be designed so that it can be carried, opened, and closed by a person wearing insulated work gloves. Each clasp or latch shall be able to be opened and closed with one gloved hand and require no more than 20 pounds of force to open or close the latch. All latching mechanisms shall be on the face of the latch, shall be operable from a single point, and have a positive catch. If a bar type handle is used, the clearance for each designated hand position inside the handle shall not be less than 2 inches by 4.5 inches. If a recessed, molded type handle is used, the space provided for each hand shall not be less than 2 inches (from palm side to knuckle side) by 5.25 inches (thumb side to little finger side) and 0.75 inches clearance for the finger tips.
