About this file
This document is a set of Questions and Clarifications related to Request for Quote (RFQ) 449156 for the NSLS-II SMI Beamline Sample Motions Assembly. The RFQ defines the requirements for the motion system hardware, including connector specifications, motion envelope, stability, and trajectory requirements. Key details include:
The RFQ requires a motion system with specific connector types and pinouts to interface with the existing legacy electrical system. The motion envelope must be maintained under all conditions, and tight specifications are provided for sphere-of-confusion, angular stroke, and trajectory stability. While no particular stability requirements were specified, the motion system must meet all other stated performance parameters. Regarding the trajectory stability, controlling the roll cross-motion is not mandatory if the pitch and yaw can be quantified without an interferometer. The proposal due date is August 14, 2024.

Questions and Clarifications

Question 1:
Attachment (B4)
• Motor connector is defined in 3.3.3.6 which has motor wires in its own connector.
o It does define a unique connector. Is that mandatory?
o We typically use 9-pin DSUBS. Would that be OK?
▪ This allows for direct connection with our standard Kapton cables.
• Absolute encoder connector is defined in 3.5.1.3 (Table 12) which as all encoder wires in its own 9-pin DSUB connector.
Attachment (B)
• Section 7.5, Table 6. Defines both motor and encoder wires into one 15-pin DSUB connector.
o This is typically not advised but can be done.
Response 1:
We do need the motor/encoder to have the connector and pinout specified in the Specification document (Section 7.5, Table 6). The new motion system needs to mate to legacy electrical vacuum feedthroughs and air-side cabling for our controls system.

Question 2:
Could you please confirm if the sample motion envelope given in the “Attachment (B5) PD-SMI-ES- WAXS-0120-RevA” is only when all motions are at their nominal zero positions ? Do we have to stay inside the given envelope for instance when the AX and AZ rotation are at +5°?
Response 2:
You must stay inside the specified envelope under all conditions. This envelope defines the space available within the vacuum chamber into which this assembly will be placed.

Question 3:
The requested sphere-of-confusion of ≤ 20µm ( common intersection point of the ax, ay, az rotation) will be hard to achieve especially with angular stroke of 5°. Are you willing to reduce the angular stroke of ax and az and / or to increase the size of the requested sphere of confusion?
Response 3:
No, we need all of the specified ranges of motion, and we need the sphere-of-confusion to be this small.
Question 4:
Stability is defined at §4.5 but there are no additional requirement. Do you have any?
Response 4 No, we did not specify any particular stability requirements.
Question 5:
For the translation TX, TY and TZ, you request to Trajectory Roll, Pitch, and Yaw inferior to 30µrad over full range. With interferometer, it is not possible to quantify the Roll error (but only the pitch and Yaw). Is it mandatory to control the Roll cross-motion?
Response 5:
We are not sure what you mean when you say “Is it mandatory to control the Roll cross-motion?”. We are not envisioning that that these motions would need to be “actively controlled” using feedback from an interferometer, if that is what you mean. We envisioned that the individual motion stages will be properly constructed to high enough standards to meet the given specifications without being “controlled”. Perhaps we are misunderstanding the question?
