SPRINKLER SYSTEMS

SECTION 21 13 13 – SPRINKLER SYSTEMS

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 SUMMARY

A. Section Includes:

1. Pipes, fittings, and specialties.

2. Fire-protection valves.

3. Sprinklers.

4. Pressure gages.

1.2 DEFINITIONS

A. Standard-Pressure Sprinkler Piping: Wet-pipe and dry-pipe sprinkler system piping designed to operate at working pressure of 175 psig (1200 kPa) maximum.

1.3 SYSTEM DESCRIPTIONS

A. Wet-Pipe Sprinkler System: Automatic sprinklers are attached to piping containing water and that is connected to water supply through alarm valve. Water discharges immediately from sprinklers when they are opened. Sprinklers open when heat melts fusible link or destroys frangible device.

B. Dry-Pipe Sprinkler System: Automatic sprinklers are attached to piping containing air which is held in the piping by a dry-pipe control valve. On the other side of the dry-pipe control valve is water that is connected to water supply. Water enters the system when air pressure in the system drops as a result of a sprinkler activation. Sprinklers open when heat melts fusible link or destroys frangible device.

C. System Summary: The Basement Level will be protected by a new dry-pipe sprinkler system.

All piping and hanging assemblies for the dry-pipe sprinkler system on the Basement Level shall be galvanized. A new dry-pipe control valve for the Basement system will be located on the First Floor in the Sprinkler Room. The First and Second Floors will be protected by a retrofitted wet-pipe sprinkler system. New floor control assemblies will be provided for the First and Second Floors. New supply mains will be provided from the sprinkler control room to the existing mains on the First and Second Floors. The re-use of existing mains is recommend on the First and Second Floor. Rerouting is required in the core area to avoid architectural features. See architectural drawings for coordination. New branch lines and sprinklers will connected to the existing mains. The existing dry-pipe control valve will be relocated to the Sprinkler Room on the First Floor to supply the existing Attic dry-pipe sprinkler system. The existing mains, branch lines, and sprinklers within the attic will remain. The connection to the attic system will be made on the Second Floor at the existing riser.

21 13 13 - 2

D. Water Supply: The water supply will enter the East Wing at the existing location. A new double check backflow preventer will be installed at the entry point.
