VIBRATION TEST ANALYSIS GUIDE FORMAT
Using the VTAG for Maintaining the MSC VMS
The Vibration Test and Analysis Guide (VTAG) contains information necessary for maintaining your vibration program (Ref. J-1 MSC ENGINEERING APPLICATION DWG). The main purpose of the VTAG is to ensure consistent collection of Vibration Data so that its comparison to the baseline set of data, taken under the same test conditions, results in an accurate analysis.
Page one illustrates test location points, proper transducer orientation, test operating conditions and nameplate information. Items 1-5 are found on page 1 of the VTAG, and items 6-7 are found on page 2.

(1) MACHINE NAME
Identifies specific machines
(2) MID
Machine Identification Number. Each machine of this exact type and configuration is assigned this MID.
Each MID has associated with it a set of average spectra, a VTAG, and a screening criteria file. Section 2 also contains the applicable SWAB (Ship(s) Work Authorization Boundary); when all VTAGs are compiled into the VTAG book, they are arranged by SWAB.

(3) TEST POINT LOCATION AND ORIENTATION
The test points are identified by numbering the bearings in the direction of the flow of energy. Orientation references the three planes relative to the test machine's shaft. In the example provided, the drawing on page one has 2A and 2R, indicating the motor drive end bearing, with A identifying the axial plane, and R identifying the radial direction.
(4) TEST RPM's AND OPERATING CONDITIONS
This box identifies the test conditions that are critical for valid testing.
(5) NAMEPLATE INFORMATION
The nameplate information on the VTAG should match the actual machinery nameplates.

(6) VIBRATION SOURCE COMPONENTS
This table identifies the significant machinery components, number of elements and their orders.
(7) VIBRATION SOURCE DIAGRAM
This diagram shows the entire machine configuration and identifies the components as listed above in the vibration source table. A component key is included in the VTAG book provided.
