Do not remove this notice – Properly destroy or return documents when no longer needed

UNIT PAVING 321413 - 6

3.2 PREPARATION

A. Clean pavers before setting by scrubbing with fiber brushes followed by a thorough drenching with clean water. Use only mild cleaning compounds that do not contain caustic or harsh fillers or abrasives in accordance with fabricator’s instructions.

B. Verify that the soil subgrade is free from standing water.

C. For Permeable Paver application: Stockpile joint/opening filler, base and subbase materials such that they are free from standing water, uniformly graded, free of any organic material or sediment, debris, and ready for placement.

3.5 INSTALLATION OF PAVERS

A. Set pavers in patterns indicated on the drawings, utilizing full range of pavers with level surface and uniform joints of widths indicated, or as pattern requires. If not indicated, as directed by the Architect.

B. Cut pavers when necessary with motor-driven saw equipped with a diamond blade designed to cut masonry with clean, sharp unchipped edges. Cut pavers as required to provide pattern shown on the drawings and to fit adjoining work neatly. Use full pavers without cutting wherever possible. Where cutting is required, use the largest size paver possible. Avoid use of small pieces of pavers or large joint spaces. Where paver pieces used are less than 1/3 of a full size unit, adhere the cut piece to the adjacent unit using paver adhesive. Maintain joint width.

C. Set pavers in patterns indicated on the drawings.

D. Fill gaps at the edge of the paved surface with standard pieces or with pavers cut to fit with a motor-driven saw. Provide cut units with straight cut surfaces, free from cracks or chips. Where paver pieces used are less than 1/3 of a full size unit, adhere the cut piece to the adjacent unit using paver adhesive. Maintain joint width.

E. Placing Pavers:

1. Place pavers carefully by hand in straight courses maintaining accurate alignment and uniform top surface. Protect newly laid pavers with panels of plywood on which workers stand. Advance protective panels as work progresses but maintain protection in areas subject to continued movement of materials and equipment, to avoid creating depressions or disrupting alignment of pavers.

G. Tolerances:

1. Do not exceed 1/16” unit to unit offset from flush, and a tolerance of 1/8” in

2’-0” and ¼” in 10’-0” from level or slope as indicated for finished surfaces of

UNIT PAVING 321413 - 7

paving. Remove and re-install any pavers or areas of pavement which do not meet finish grade tolerances indicated above.

2. Where pavers abut vertical surfaces or where a paver type and/or color change occurs, paver edges shall align to produce a consistent line.

3. Paver spacing: see drawings for spacing in different paver applications.

3.6 INSTALLATION OF PERMEABLE PAVERS

A. General

1. Any excess thickness of soil applied over the excavated soil subgrade to trap sediment from adjacent construction activities shall be removed before application of the geotextile material.

2. Keep area where pavement is to be constructed free from sediment during entire job.

Geotextile and bedding materials contaminated with sediment shall be removed and replaced with clean materials.

B. Geotextiles

1. Place on bottom and sides of soil subgrade. Secure in place.

2. Overlap a minimum of 12 inches, 24 inches in the direction of drainage.

C. Bedding Layer

1. Moisten, spread and screed No. 8 stone bedding material.

2. Fill voids left by removed screed rails with No. 8 stone.

3. The surface tolerance of the screeded No. 8 bedding layer shall be +/- 3/8 inch over a 10 ft straightedge.

4. Do not subject screeded bedding material to any pedestrian or vehicular traffic before paving unit installation begins.

D. Concrete Pavers and Joint/ Opening Fill Material

1. Lay the paver in the patterns and joint widths shown on the drawings. Maintain straight pattern lines. Use paver spacers to maintain a consistent joint width of

3/8” thick.

2. Fill gaps at the edges of the paved area with cut units.

Do not remove this notice – Properly destroy or return documents when no longer needed

UNIT PAVING 321413 - 8

3. Cut pavers and place along the edges with a masonry saw.

4. Fill the openings and joints with No. 9 stone.

5. Remove excess aggregate on the surface by sweeping pavers clean.

6. Compact and seat the pavers into the bedding material using a low-amplitude, 75-90

Hz plate compactor capable of at least 4,000 lbs centrifugal compaction force.

This will require at least two passes with the plate compactor.

7. Do not compact within 6 ft of the unrestrained edges of the paving units.

8. Apply additional aggregate to the openings and joints, filling them completely.

Remove excess aggregate by sweeping then compact the pavers. This will require at least two passes with the place compactor.

9. All pavers within 6 ft of the laying face must be left fully compacted at the completion of each day.

10. The final surface tolerance of compacted pavers shall not deviate more than +/- 3/8 inch under a 10 ft long straightedge.

11. The surface elevation of pavers shall be 1/8 to ¼ inch above adjacent drainage inlets, concrete collars or channels.

3.7 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL OF PERMEABLE PAVER APPLICATION

A. After sweeping the surface clean, check final elevations for conformance to the drawings.

B. Lippage: No greater than 1/8 inch difference in height between adjacent pavers.

C. The surface elevation of pavers shall be 1/8 to ¼ inch above adjacent drainage inlets, concrete collars or channels.

3.8 PROTECTION

A. Restrict traffic from pavement surfaces during setting of pavers and until completion of installation.

B. Installer shall advise Contractor of proper procedures required to protect pavers from collapse, deterioration, discoloration or damage during construction.

C. Protect pavers from damage until final acceptance.

D. After permeable paver installation is complete, the General Contractor shall be responsible for protecting work from sediment deposition and damage due to subsequent

construction activity on the site.

3.9 REPAIR AND CLEANING

A. Remove and replace pavers which are broken, chipped, stained or otherwise damaged.

Provide new matching pavers, install as specified.

B. Cleaning:

1. Remove excess materials from exposed pavement surfaces, wash and scrub clean.

2. Apply paver cleaner per manufacturer’s recommendations.

3. If staining material cannot be removed, replace stained pavers(s) with new pavers.

D. Upon completion of work, remove from site all excess materials, debris, and equipment.

Repair damage resulting from paving operations.
