1. SCOPE
1.1. GENERAL SCOPE
This appendix establishes the minimum performance, design, fabrication, installation, and test requirements for cantilever rack in Building 216 at Shaw Air Force Base (AFB), South Carolina. The work shall be completed in accordance with this appendix, the cover PD, and Air Force (AF) Drawing TSH804-02.
This appendix is intended to cover all equipment, materials, and labor necessary to complete installation of the system.
1.2. DEFINITIONS
Arm - Horizontal load carrying member which locks to the upright.
Base - Horizontal load carrying member which rests on the floor and supports the upright.
Bracing - Steel bracing which is used to attach adjacent uprights to each other and space adjacent uprights from each other. Bracing prevents twisting and swaying.
Decking - A wire mesh surface spanning the area between two parallel arms used for storage of loose items.
Upright - Vertical load carrying member which supports the cantilever arms. Also known as column.
2. APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS
Applicable documents shall be per section 2 of the cover PD.
3. REQUIREMENTS
3.1. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
The cantilever racks covered by this Appendix are intended for storing a variety of nonstandard sized items. Storage and retrieval operations within the cantilever rack will be performed with the use of forklifts. The layout of the rack shall be as shown on AF Drawing TSH804-02. The cantilever rack shall consist of the following components:
a. Bases
b. Uprights
Shaw AFB, SC - App F - Page 2
c. Bracing (horizontal and diagonal)
d. Arms
e. Wire mesh decking
f. Mechanical fasteners and all other items required to install the cantilever rack.
3.2. CHARACTERISTICS
3.2.1. CANTILEVER RACK DESIGN
All components shall be constructed to produce a rigid, stable rack. The design and construction of each load bearing component shall ensure that the component is capable of sustaining the maximum load with a safety factor of not less than 1.65 to 1. No component of the cantilever rack shall exhibit any plastic (permanent) deformation.
3.2.2. BASES
There shall be one base for each upright in the system, which shall be used as a shelf. It shall provide support for the upright and shall prevent the racks from leaning or collapsing when the rack is loaded to capacity. The base shall be at least as long as the upright depth plus the length of the arms.
Single-sided cantilever rack shall have bases which are longer than the upright depth plus the arm length, unless they are anchored to the floor
3.2.3. UPRIGHTS
Uprights shall have an overall height of 12 feet and a capacity of 6,000 pounds. They shall have a means for adjusting arms on nominal three inch centers from 24 inches above the floor to six inches from the top of the upright. Uprights shall be spaced on 72 inch centers.
3.2.4. BRACING
Horizontal and diagonal bracing shall be used to maintain alignment of the cantilever racks under varying loads and horizontal stresses. The bracing shall hold the uprights vertical, maintaining the proper spacing between the uprights.
3.2.4.1. HORIZONTAL BRACING
Shaw AFB, SC - App F - Page 3
A minimum of three horizontal braces are required between every two uprights. These braces shall be evenly spaced along the upright.
3.2.4.2. DIAGONAL BRACING
A minimum of one diagonal, X-type braces are required between every other set of uprights (i.e., between uprights 1 and 2, 3 and 4, 5 and 6, etc.). They shall also be installed at each end of every row.
3.2.5. ARMS
2 arms shall be provided for each upright. These arms shall be installed as shown on AF Drawing TSH804-02. Each arm shall be capable of supporting 2,000 pounds. The arms shall be 48 inches long and shall fasten securely to the uprights by use of a connector. The arms shall have a minimum upward pitch of 1/4 inch per foot to compensate for any deflection under full rated load. No arm, when loaded to capacity, shall deflect below the horizontal plane.
3.2.5.1. CONNECTORS
The connector shall be capable of transferring all loads and external forces of the arm to the column without failure of the connection, or damage to the column or connector. The connectors shall ensure a snug, metal-to-metal fit between the horizontal and vertical load carrying members.
3.2.5.2. SAFETY CATCH FEATURE
If adjustable connectors are used, a safety catch feature shall be provided on each arm to securely lock the arm to the column at the assembly. Design of the catch feature shall preclude the arm from dislodging due to impact or movement of the racks.
3.2.6. ROW MARKERS
Card holders shall be installed on the end of each rack section for row identification. Two card holders shall be mounted on each end of every row. The card holders shall be large enough for a minimum 8 inch by 8 inch card to be displayed. The card holders shall be mounted between 7 feet and 10 feet from the floor. Row identification cards will be made up by the warehouse personnel according to their established location assignment practices. A blank card will be provided by the Contractor for each card holder.

3.2.7. WIRE MESH DECKING
Wire mesh decking shall be installed between all parallel arms and adjacent bases. The decking shall be heavy duty welded steel wire, capable of supporting the maximum load. The decking shall be plated to protect against corrosion. The decking shall be supported between each pair of parallel arms and adjacent bases by at least three, evenly spaced, deck support beams. The decking shall be installed flush with the top of the arms by using deck support beam saddles, connected to the arms with mechanical fastening devices. The decking shall be installed to prevent accidental disengagement from the deck support beams.
4. QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS
4.1. INSPECTIONS
The cantilever rack shall be inspected to verify that it meets all the requirements of sections 1, 2, and 3 of this appendix and the cover purchase description. These inspections shall be completed as part of the system checkout test and again as a part of the quality conformance test.
4.2. TESTS
The following tests shall be performed on the system as part of the system checkout test and again as a part of the quality conformance test.
No. Paragraph Description
1. 3.2.1. Maximum loads shall be placed randomly in the rack system. After not less than four hours, the test loads shall be removed and the rack examined for signs of deformation. If any component of the system exhibits plastic deformation, the system fails the test.
2. 3.2.5. Maximum loads shall be placed randomly in the rack system. After not less than four hours, the system will be examined for signs of deformation. If any arm deflects below the horizontal plane, the system fails the test.
4.3. CERTIFICATIONS
Shaw AFB, SC - App F - Page 5
The Contractor shall provide certification that the following requirements have been met. All certifications shall be provided in accordance with the Contract Data Requirements List.
No. Paragraph Certifications
1. 3.2.1. The design and construction of each load bearing component ensures that the component is capable of sustaining the maximum load with a safety factor of not less than 1.65 to 1.
