FLIGHT LINE TOW TRACTOR

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

MARCH 20, 2009

Question: The CID specifies that the flight line tow tractor must be a commercially available truck chassis, called a chassis cab. Is a modified cab over (cab forward) commercial truck chassis cab acceptable for the flight line tow tractor?

Answer: No, the AF is requiring a commercial "chassis cab", sometimes also referred to as a "pickup box-delete". Reference further clarifying detail found in the CID continuation sheet for paragraph "2.14 Chassis modifications which specifically states the following: "The tow tractor shall be based on a commercial truck chassis also known as a chassis cab. The commercial truck chassis cab shall be modified to the specified wheelbase by relocating the rear axle, suspension, and other affected components forward on the original chassis frame rails

Question: What is the air pressure requirement, in CFM, for the flight line tow tractor trailer braking system?

Answer: The AF is seeking an air system that is of an over-the-road commercial truck/tractor design having the capability to control various air-braked trailers. There are commercial practices in place and system component manufactures that can point to a range of acceptable pressures and volumetric flow rates for such a system.
