Questions and Answers for Bi-Parting Empennage Enclosure

May 12, 2011

Q. "Subject: Electrical. As I understand it, there are different classification for fueled aircraft and the codes are open to interpretation.

1. Almost all hangars are designed on the following criteria:

- all pits are Class 1 Division 1

- the first 18" above the floor level is Class 1 Division 1

- all space within 5' of the aircraft is Class 1 Division 1

- all other space is Class 1 Division 2

2. Paint hangars and hangars with open fuel cell are usually (but not always) designed as 100% Class 1 Division 1.

The difference in cost is substantial. Please clarify which of the two options apply."

A. The ISO Dock in DC Hangar which is where this BPEE is located is the first option (option 1.). This is not a paint or open fuel cell dock.

Q. “The only way to get 60 foot candles of illumination underneath the tail stand is with horizontal flood lighting. The lights may need to be high wattage to reach from the side wall to the center of the enclosure. This can be blinding.

Where will the 60 foot candle requirement be measured and is the tail stand to be in place. If so, will the lights on the tail stand be included in the calculation of illumination.”

A. The Statement of Objective paragraph 4.1.1.13 calls for 60 foot candles on the ground. The light measurement will not be taken directly under the tail stand or fuselage. It will be measured on the ground outside the footprint of the plane and tail stand on the ground. These lighting levels could be accomplished using a combination of side wall and ceiling mounted fixtures.

Q. “When closing the BPEE the area to provide safety edges is clear.

When opening the BPEE the entire wall 110' x 90' (+/-) is subject to hitting and obstruction.

Please provide the requirements for safety edge when traveling in the opening direction.”

A. The safety edge is only for the mating edges between the two halves of the BPEE from the ground to the top of the enclosure.
