Repair Renovate Dorm 748 (USMC)

Little Rock AFB, AR Responses to Questions

1 April 2009

RFI #50: The attic FP plans show a single line of upright sprinkler heads on a looped dry system. Upright sprinkler heads will not cover the attic completely with the spacing shown and NFPA 13 standards do not allow loops on dry systems.

Updated Response to # 50 - Refer to Section 21 13 00 Fire Suppression Systems, Part 1 – General 1.01 General "Include all plant facilities, labor, material, equipment and service necessary for the hydraulic design, fabrication and installation of wet and dry pipe automatic sprinkler systems as herein described and indicated in this contract. The drawings for the Fire Suppression System are diagrammatic only.

RFI #51: Sheet FP-1 states that all interior piping should be CPVC, but NFPA 13 standards do not allow plastic pipe use with dry systems. Should standard schedule 10 and

40 black steel be used in lieu of the CPVC?

Updated Response to #51- See response to #50 above. CPVC Blaze Master has been approved by NFPA 13 and UFC 3 600-1.

RFI #53: The water flow information that was given on sheet FP-1 raises a concern that the attic dry system will not work with out the aid of a fire pump. Has there been preliminary calculations ran to prove that this attic dry system will work?

Updated Response to # 53 - Refer to Section 21 13 00 Fire Suppression Systems, Part 1 – General 1.02 Test Data - "Hydrant flow test data for LRAFB will only be made available to the

Contractor for use in hydraulic design work, if available". No data is available at this time. Refer to Sheet FP-1 Sprinkler System Notes for more detail. See note A.

RFI #54: The answer given to RFI #21 was insufficient. The existing ductwork is insulated internally. To lower the duct and grilles below fur-down for the sprinkler piping will cause the ductwork to be below ceiling height in the hallway.

Response to #54 – As stated above, the Fire Protection System Drawings are diagrammatic only and will require some design effort. In areas where there is a conflict, it is the Contractors responsibility to provide an acceptable solution to all areas of conflict created by the design and layout of the sprinkler system.

RFI #55: Sheet M-1 Notes 13 & 14 -- Are the new gas and water meters tied into the EMS?

Response to #55 – No.

RFI #56: Sheet M-1 Note 12 -- Does this note refer only to the mechanical room? Does it include control valves on FCUs?

Response to #56 – Only on the boiler in Mechanical Room.

RFI #57: Has HVAC piping (chilled and heated water) been drained? If so, who is responsible for refill?

Response to #57 – LRAFB drained the system when the system was shut down. The Contractor is responsible for making the system operational.

RFI #58: Will the new controls for the OAU be stand-alone or tied into the existing control system? If tied in, what type of system exists?

Response to #58 – No, they will not be tied in.

RFI #59: Sheet A-1 Note 45 calls for fire caulk; is this for new penetrations only?

Response to #59 – Note is for all new penetrations and any existing holes, etc found during construction, where required to maintain separation.
