About this file
This is a Corrosion Condition Assessment Report submitted by DACCO SCI, INC. to The Wilson T. Ballard Company on behalf of the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) in Maryland. The report documents initial field observations for two large valve vault replacement projects in Silver Spring, Montgomery County, Maryland: Project BT7370A22 located at 1200 W University Boulevard (30-inch diameter relocation) and Project BT7373A22 located at 12501 Old Columbia Pike (24-inch diameter retrofit). The assessment was conducted using the WSSC Corrosion Survey Checklist and was completed on February 15, 2023. No stray current sources were identified in the areas surrounding either valve vault replacement.
DACCO SCI, INC. determined that soil corrosivity testing is required for BT7370A22 due to the 30-inch pipe diameter, with design recommendations to be provided in a preliminary report following completion of testing and analysis. For BT7373A22, no recommendations were issued as it is expected to be a retrofit with no new pipe installation outside the valve vault; however, if pipe replacement becomes necessary outside the vault, the report recommends using zinc-coated ductile iron pipe with V-BIO encasement and field coating of connections to existing ductile iron pipe for five feet on either side. Testing may not be required at BT7373A22 due to its retrofit nature.

RE: REVISED – INITIAL FIELD OBSERVATIONS – CORROSION
CONDITION ASSESSMENT OF THE LARGE VALVE VAULT
REPLACEMENT - WSSC JOB NOS. BT7370A22 AND BT7373A22
Dear Mr. Ziegenfuss:
DACCO SCI, INC. has completed the initial field observations using the WSSC Corrosion Survey Checklist for the corrosion assessment of the BT7370A22 and BT7373A22 Valve Vault Replacements.
No stray current source was identified in the area around either valve vault replacement. Soil corrosivity testing is required to be conducted at BT7370A22 because the proposed replacement is 30-inches in diameter.
BT7373A22 is expected to be a retrofit with no new pipe being installed outside the valve vault.
As a result, DACCO SCI, INC. had no recommendations for the proposed replacement.
Recommendations for the design of BT7370A22 will be provided after the completion of soil corrosivity testing and included in the Preliminary Report.
If there are any questions or revisions to the report, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely, Chester Dacres, Ph.D., P.E.
President

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Location of Project
Table 1 below summarizes the Large Valve Vault (LVV) replacement project. Figure 1 and Figure 2 show the alignment of BT7370A22 and BT7373A22, respectively.

Soil corrosivity testing should be conducted at BT7370A22 because the proposed replacement is 30-inches in diameter. Testing may not be required at BT7373A22 because it is expected to be a retrofit.
RECOMMENDATIONS
DACCO SCI, INC. recommends that:
1. MV7370A22: The design of the proposed valve vault replacement will be provided after the completion of soil corrosivity testing and included in the Preliminary Report.
2. MV7373A22: No recommendations are applicable. No pipe replacement is expected outside of the proposed valve vault. If pipe replacement is required outside of the valve vault, design using zinc-coated ductile iron pipe (DIP) with V-BIO encasement.
Additionally, connections to existing DIP should be field coated five (5)-feet on either side of the connection and V-BIO encased.
The WSSC Corrosion Survey Checklist is shown below.
