About this file

This document package includes specifications and drawings for a federal construction contract to modify platforms in a Vehicle Assembly Building. The contractor shall fabricate and install new platforms weighing approximately 300,000 pounds each, consisting of support structures, mechanical and electrical systems for platform movement, and communications, lighting and fire suppression systems. Additional scope includes new floors and rooms, as well as modification and extension of building systems including fire suppression pipes and valves, fire alarm, high-pressure gas tubing, and electrical power. Work will occur at heights from 280 to 450 feet above ground and must be completed during operational downtime between launches, with potential for dual occupancy. The specifications include requirements for materials, cleaning and passivation of stainless steel, and construction phasing.

Stainless steel tubing shall be fabricated and installed per KSC-SPEC-Z-0008. Tube material shall be AL6XN per KSC-SPEC- P-0027. Tubing thickness requirements are shown on the drawings.

All tubing shall be provided by the contractor.

NOTE: KSC-SPEC-Z-0008 does not address the use of AL6XN tube material. All requirements in KSC-SPEC-Z-0008 shall apply to AL6XN tubing except the following:

The test ball size used for checking the tube inside diameter after bending shall be 0.344" for 1/2"x0.049" wall tube and 0.250" for 3/8"x0.035" wall tube. Note: These tube sizes are not presently used for this project.

A schedule showing all tubing sizes and thicknesses shall be developed by the Contractor.
