Waysides must conform to standards to ensure they are safe for visitors who are blind or have low vision. This requires that bases greater than 12” between legs or greater than 12” on either side of a center leg shall be cane detectable along accessible routes, and within circulation areas and paths. For elements that protrude 4” or more on an accessible route or in a circulation space or path, minimum cane detectability is 27” from the ground to the bottom of the panel. This requirement includes all areas regardless if they are accessible by persons who use wheelchairs or other mobility devices. This cane detectable wayside base option meets requirements for protruding objects in the Architectural Barriers Act Accessibility Standards.
